Free Music Notes for A Turtle's Dream

Free Music Review: From deep within
Hit: 5 Stars

This is the first Abbey Lincon CD I've had. It was recommended in a New York times article. She is a wonderment. Both in song selection and in her connection with the lyrics and music, she is so focused, so concentrated, so inside what she's doing. Even after listening many times, this CD keeps revealing it's many surprises...not to be missed.

Free Music Review: Her music is about life!!!
Hit: 5 Stars

I have to agree with Erik Werkman. Abbey Lincoln's voice and style just have a way of sending "shivers down the spine".
I, also, first heard of Abbey Lincoln during a television interview a few years ago. It was during the Black Arts Festival in Atlanta Georgia. The interview was dynamite! But what really began my fascination with Abbey Lincoln, besides my being a Smooth Jazz listener, was when she sung "Throw it away". I have spent the last few years now trying to obtain any and all works of Abbey Lincoln, including the movie, "FOR THE LOVE OF IVY".

Free Music Review: Shivers down my spine...
Hit: 5 Stars

I got acquainted to Ms Lincoln through an interview I saw on television. What struck me immediately about here was the wisdom with which she made her observations on her career, on music and life in general. After that I just needed to buy her CD, which happened to be this one as this was her latest release at that time. Putting on the CD at home I sat down and was not able to move anymore after hearing the first notes of "Throw It Away": it immediately sent shivers down my spine and I was just struck by the beauty of the music. The rest of the CD is equally incredible, maybe with just the exception of the French "Avec Le Temps", but that is just a minor detail. The cast of musicians accompanying her are also top notch: Pat Metheny does some incredibly fine things on electric and acoustic guitar, pianists Rodney Kendrick and Kenny Barron both do a perfect job and a better and more subtle drummer than Victor Lewis could not be wished for. This album is about life and beauty in a way that might only be matched by Shirley Horn, although their stiles are different of course. Essential. "Who Used To Dance" and "You Gotta Pay The Band" are also very good and I have them too, but this one remains my favorite of her albums.

Free Music Review: Abbey - You go girl!!!
Hit: 5 Stars

This is Abbey Lincoln at her best. She wraps herself in and out and around this wonderful selection of numbers. Her songwriting is superb and timeless. The musicians who accompany her throughout the recording complement her movements so well. Abbey is true jazz diva. Enjoy!!

Free Music Review: Beyond Superb!
Hit: 5 Stars

For those movie aficianados, that also love good music, you will be delighted to know that Ms. Lincoln is indeed the same Abbey Lincoln who starred alongside Sidney Portier in the movie, For The Love of Ivy. Ms. Lincoln also starred in Nothing But A Man, a stirring tale woven in the fabric of the Jim Crow southern experience. Both movies give clear indications of Ms. Lincoln's magnetism on screen. Ironically, I only recently learned of Abbey Lincoln's vocal abilities, after a generous friend gave me a copy of of A Turtle's Dream. The CD came at a time I really needed to inwardly reflect and be at peace with my self. This album stirred things in me that I was previously unaware of. It revitalized me beyond measure! A Turtle's Dream is more than music..it is an awakening, brought to you through the magnanimous voice of Ms. Abbey Lincoln, who relates circumstance after (life) circumstance with a commitment to doing one better than living through it. Her voice radiates and exemplifies the indomitable spirit. The musical accompaniment to Ms. Lincoln is unrivaled...a match made in heaven for the listener. Truly a gem to cherish...and definitely to share! Bravo, Ms. Abbey Lincoln!
