Free Music Review: In Search of a Melody
Hit: 1 Stars

"On the Way" is my introduction to Abra Moore. Jack Spencer's photography in the booklet is exquisite making Moore seem like a floating angel. "There was a boy, he was a young boy, he took his shirt off in the sun & he started to sway," Moore begins on the opener "Into the Sunset" that has more atmosphere than melody. Moore stays on pitch most of the time. Moore's voice reminds me of Annie Gallup whose CD Swerve was a favorite because of the musical diversity and humor of the disc. Although I'm not crazy about Moore's voice, the real problem with the disc is the lack of melody. Songs like "After All These Years" & the title track lack individuality. Ephraim Owens' trumpet adds a nice touch to "Sorry"; unfortunately, Moore's vocals don't sell what is a pretty good song. She's seems tiny, not emotionally gripping. "I Believe" & "Take Care of Me" have me reach for the skip button. "No Turning Back" puts me to sleep. "You" is embarrassingly bad, sounding like it was a great emotional experience that Moore should have kept to herself. "Birthday Song" has Moore reaching for notes as she puts me to sleep. I haven't heard a CD quite this awful since Jesca Hoop's Kismet. Abra Moore is a pretty girl. Enjoy looking at her picture as you put on Annie Gallup's "Three Bills." Taxi!

On the Way Poster

The spirit of Lilith Fair renews itself in the music of Austin's Abra Moore, who flashed breakout potential with 1997's Strangest Places (which earned her a Grammy nomination) but who all but disappeared over the decade since. Here, she reunites with producer/multi-instrumentalist Mitch Watkins, who provides atmospheric arrangements behind the wispy-voiced romanticism of Moore's vocals. Like the idealized, poeticized boy of the opening "Into the Sunset" (an update of the Icarus myth), her vocal airiness occasionally threatens to float away. Fortunately, the support of accompanists including vocalist Will Sexton, percussionist Pat Mastelotto, and trumpeter Ephraim Owens, along with guitarist-keyboardist Watkins, provides counterweight ballast. On the title cut, Moore's horn-like vocals blend so well with Owens's flugelhorn that it can be hard to distinguish between them. --Don McLeese
On The Way finds Abra Moore completely at ease in her own skin and voice. It's a ferociously quiet album that unfolds gently but packs an emotional wallop with its unwavering honesty. It's an album full of subtle moods. There's always been an atmospheric quality to Moore's writing - maybe that's why Hollywood keeps seeking out her music. Moore's songs have appeared in more than 25 films and television shows including Cruel Intentions, Sliding Doors (with Gwenyth Paltrow), Happy Texas, Party of Five, Dawson's Creek, Felicity and Melrose Place. Her song "Big Sky" was used in the super-hot video game The Sims with one little twist--she had to rerecord all the vocals in Simlish, the language used in the game.

In many ways, On The Way captures the cinematic magic of a great film. From the opening seduction of "Into The Sunset" to the closing reprise of the title track, it transports the listener to a different space. It's a roll-the-windows-down-and-drive kind of record. "Making this record I found the sweet balance," says Moore. "My life is good and happy. These songs are little snapshots of where I'm at. I tried to capture and present these experiences as honestly as I could. If you just stay honest and true, you'll connect with the listeners. You become part of their lives. That's a privilege you can't take for granted."

Reveling in the sheer joy of making music, living in the moment and enjoying the process is an integral part of Moore's journey. That's why On The Way is so aptly titled. It's all about the journey--life unfolding in all its mystery, agony and majesty. True art holds a mirror up and reflects back the hard truths, as well as the ones that enlighten. On The Way is a masterpiece of mood and honesty from one of the preeminent artists working in popular music.
