The Abyssinians combine vocal harmonies and roots rhythms into an intoxicating reggae brew. This is good stuff, strong all the way through until a relatively weak final track ("There is No End"). The title track, "Declaration of Rights" and "African Race" are top-notch, the kind of gently magnetic reggae one sees very little of these days. The only problem is that all these cuts are pretty much at the same tempo; still, there is enough diversity among the melodies to keep it from getting boring. "Satta Massagana" evidently means "give thanks." We should give thanks that this fine reggae from the early 1970s is still available.
