Free Music Notes for Across the UniverseFree Music Review: A Fun, Impressive Effort. Hit: 5 Stars
Pay no mind to the purists who are absolutely enraged that a musical, much less an album, has been released featuring Beatles songs performed by artists other than The Beatles. Julie Taymor's wonderful film is a musical journey to the past, and a possible statement on our present. The soundtrack itself is a beautiful collaboration that does not butcher these classic songs, instead it shows just how vital and impressive they remain. The technical credits are flawless and the chosen vocals are fitting for each and every track. Its interesting how many of the arrangements give new meaning to these songs, just listen to "I Want To Hold Your Hand," where here comes back to life as a heartbreaking ballad of aching love. "It Won't Be Long" and "I've Just Seen A Face" are exhilarating and fun while "Let It Be" cries with gospel fervor. "Come Together" is a heavy blues jam that crawls with menacing grace. U2 fans will get a kick out of Bono's scorching rendition of "I Am The Walrus" and his equallly hallucinatory "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" (The Edge does backing vocals on this one). Some of the songs are turned into powerful, lush meditations fitting for our times like "Across The Universe" and "Strawberry Fields Forever" with their gorgeous orchestral touches. "Helter Skelter" is a burning rocker with a great, furious female vocal. "Happiness Is A Warm Gun" is turned into a solemn, dark jam. "Across The Universe" has gained many fans as a film musical, and indeed the movie is a great experience, but the soundtrack is also worth checking out, these are excellent arrangements with strong vocals of classic songs. Songs that are so timeless that indeed, these arrangements make them fitting for our own troubled era. It is hard to imagine someone who doesn't know at least one of these songs, but hopefully this album will introduce people to not just the Beatles catalogue, but the actual heart of the music.
Free Music Review: I love the movie and the soundtrack Hit: 5 Stars
I love this movie, so I love the soundtrack, because when I hear the songs I am transported back to my favorite scenes in the film. I think the singing is very well done and I really enjoy these versions of the songs. Normally, I'd say that I don't like them nearly as much as the original versions. That would be true if this was just a collection of Beatle's songs re-done by various artists. However, when we are talking about songs that tell a story in the movie, I have to say I enjoy the songs a lot more and (dare I say it) almost as much as the originals. I guess my point is that, although you may like this st if you haven't seen the movie, I think you will like it more if you have. However, if you do listen to it before seeing the movie, keep an open mind and please realize that, in some instances, the context in which the song is used warrants a rather different version from what you may be used to hearing. Oh, and I'd definitely recommend getting the deluxe version.
Free Music Review: Amazing ... Hit: 5 Stars
First of all, it's very difficult to properly review this soundtrack without seeing the movie. Each song is performed in a particular context ... very creatively, I might add ... and forming an opinion on just the song itself without having the visual that Julie Taymor put with it is not doing yourself, or the creative work, proper credit.
I just saw the movie tonight and it is brilliant. And each song was amazingly portrayed on film. While "Let It Be" was by far my favorite song (as well as gut wrenching scene), I swear I will never hear "Strawberry Fields Forever" in the same way. These songs really MUST be heard with the visual that Julie brilliantly directed. I cannot stress that enough.
This album is not about paying homage to The Beatles as much as it was to use the Beatles music to tell a story. And trust me, that it has done.
Free Music Review: Beatles Fan or Not ... ACROSS THE UNIVERSE is "awesome"! Hit: 5 Stars
The fact that I have been a Beatles Fan since the "60s" is of no consequence in my rating of this CD. It is an unbelievably excellent tapestry of Beatles music. I have yet to see the movie but the music is put together so fantastically that with a little bit of imagination one can envision the various scenes of the movie. This is "must-have" CD for any Beatles fan .... of any age. I listened to the entire CD in one sitting and immediately put it on my IPOD. My 12-year old grandson fell in love with the music and promptly put the tracks on his Nano as well. In talking with several people who have listened to it .... the results are unanimous; this is one awesome collection of well-intepreted Beatles music.
Free Music Review: Excellent, moving, brilliant piece of work. Hit: 5 Stars
I love love loved the film. It is this beautiful mixture of elements from Hair & Moulin Rogue blended together with perfect casting, a dream soundtrack with covers of the best music ever recorded that would do the Fab 4 proud. Visually stunning, this film brought me to tears not just because of things that happen to the characters but because of the emotion of the music. I am a huuuuge Beatles fan and was very skeptical about how the songs would be performed. Every song was done beautifully by the cast and fit perfectly into the story by Julie Taymor. I could gush and gush forever on this film - I loved it and can't wait to see it again.
