The music is great but would have liked more of the songs included. ii would gladly have paid more - for a more complete soundtrack.

Free Music Review: Across the Universe
Hit: 3 Stars

I thought I liked it, but it wasn't as good as I thought it was.

Free Music Review: A Very Below-Average Homage to The Beatles
Hit: 2 Stars

I just got the soundtrack yesterday. Haven't seen the movie, so I wasn't 'picturing' the songs in my head as I listened to the album.

Well, heres the thing. Everyone sounds fairly good here, but its really very tiring. As a huge Beatles fan, I can only see this as yet another misguided attempt to cash in on their memory and talent. NONE of these songs are magical here. ALL of them sound very average. Someone said that the brooding, ballad version of "I Want to hold your hand" was chilling and gave the song new meaning. WHAT? It wasn't even average. And Evan Rachel Wood isn't especially good at holding a note.

At best, this sounds like a bunch of OK-Trained singers performing Karaoke to the Beatles' hits, with a couple of strings and percussion thrown in every now and then to make everything sound 'classy'. Frankly, I was insulted, and heres hoping more true Beatles fans take note of whats going on here.

Very disappointed, and I was let down especially since all the hype and positive press this soundtrack has been getting.

Two Stars. Both for The Beatles originals that have been slaughtered here.

PS: In a side note, NO OTHER ARTIST other than The Beatles could get the pronunciation of "Jai Guru Deva" on the title track right. I have versions by Fiona Apple, Rufus Wainwright and a bunch of others, but none of them have done it the way its supposed to be. On this CD, its just as bad.

Free Music Review: + 1/2 stars...Who'd-a Thought Beatles Songs Could Be So Boring?
Hit: 2 Stars

I went into this with high expectations. The promotional clips for the movie (which I saw when I went to "Hairspray") piqued my curiosity. Imagine my disappointment upon hearing the entire soundtrack. (Yes, I bought the 2-disc edition, but twice as many bland covers of classic Beatles songs, still doesn't make it a bargain.)

With a handful of exceptions, the 15 tracks on this disc are no better or worse than what you might expect from your average cover band. Sticking close to the Beatles' original arrangements, these renditions offer nothing new and pale in comparison to the originals. The only two tracks that stand out are Jim Sturgess' rockabilly treatment of "I've Just Seen a Face" and Carol Woods and Timothy T. Mitchum's gospel performance of "Let It Be." The rest of the songs are entirely dispensible.

I had hoped this might be the album to turn my daughter onto the magic of the Beatles. I think I'll give her a copy of BEATLES 1 instead. [Running time - 46:18]

(PS: To those of you that are simply blown away by the music of this soundtrack--and not merely the visuals of the film--you will be dumbstruck by how amazing the originals are!)

Free Music Review: Not Entirely Unpleasant, but . . .
Hit: 2 Stars

ACROSS THE UNIVERSE, as a film soundtrack sung by the performers, is not as campy as PAINT YOUR WAGON and not as interesting as TRUE STORIES. The production, arrangements, and musicianship are satisfying enough, but the vocals tend to be lackluster--capable, but not outstanding, with Evan Rachel Woods as the standout. The star vocalists make the actors pale by comparison. Highlights of the special edition of the soundtrack are Eddie Izzard's doing his best John Cleese imitation on "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite," Joe Cocker's "Come Together," the Secret Machines' "Flying" and "Blue Jay Way," their collaboration with Bono on "I Am the Walrus," and Bono's performance of "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" (with The Edge on backing vocals). Recommended for U2 completists, this album is otherwise destined for the cut-out bin. I like it better than the Bee Gees/Frampton SGT PEPPER, but I do not like it as much as ALL THIS AND WORLD WAR II. A much more satisfying contemporary film soundtrack of Beatles covers would be I AM SAM.
