Free Music Review: Community Service Punishment
Hit: 1 Stars

First of all has anyone seen this movie? It's as bad if not worse than the SGT. Pepper movie. If you've seen Rent, Godspell, and or Hair, then you've seen the film. On to the music.

The fact that Evan Rachel Wood is singing 1 note and that note being a Beatle note is horribly wrong.

If Bono hadn't shown up, this record never would have been made.

Free Music Review: + 1/2 stars...Who'd-a Thought Beatles Songs Could Be So Boring?
Hit: 2 Stars

I went into this with high expectations. The promotional clips for the movie (which I saw when I went to "Hairspray") piqued my curiosity. Imagine my disappointment upon hearing the entire soundtrack. (Yes, I bought the 2-disc edition, but twice as many bland covers of classic Beatles songs, still doesn't make it a bargain.)

With a handful of exceptions, the 15 tracks on this disc are no better or worse than what you might expect from your average cover band. Sticking close to the Beatles' original arrangements, these renditions offer nothing new and pale in comparison to the originals. The only two tracks that stand out are Jim Sturgess' rockabilly treatment of "I've Just Seen a Face" and Carol Woods and Timothy T. Mitchum's gospel performance of "Let It Be." The rest of the songs are entirely dispensible.

I had hoped this might be the album to turn my daughter onto the magic of the Beatles. I think I'll give her a copy of BEATLES 1 instead. [Running time - 46:18]

(PS: To those of you that are simply blown away by the music of this soundtrack--and not merely the visuals of the film--you will be dumbstruck by how amazing the originals are!)

Free Music Review: Dull and mindless
Hit: 1 Stars

What sounded like a great idea for a movie falls flat on this soundtrack. The songs are great, but the arrangements don't break any new ground. Joe Cocker's "Come Together" sounds mindless, like he's going through the motions. Aerosmith's "Come Together" is far superior, as is that band's interpretation of "I'm Down." Even Bono's "I am the Walrus" lacks creativity.

Talented people perform the greatest music ever written, but where's the passion?

Free Music Review: Amazing ...
Hit: 5 Stars

First of all, it's very difficult to properly review this soundtrack without seeing the movie. Each song is performed in a particular context ... very creatively, I might add ... and forming an opinion on just the song itself without having the visual that Julie Taymor put with it is not doing yourself, or the creative work, proper credit.

I just saw the movie tonight and it is brilliant. And each song was amazingly portrayed on film. While "Let It Be" was by far my favorite song (as well as gut wrenching scene), I swear I will never hear "Strawberry Fields Forever" in the same way. These songs really MUST be heard with the visual that Julie brilliantly directed. I cannot stress that enough.

This album is not about paying homage to The Beatles as much as it was to use the Beatles music to tell a story. And trust me, that it has done.
