Free Music Notes for The Journey: The Best of Adiemus

Free Music Review: Great Introduction to Adiemus
Hit: 5 Stars

I was first exposed to Adiemus by a coworker who brought "Songs of Sanctuary" to work one day. I subsequently went to buy that disc but discovered this one and bought it instead. This disc more than twice as long as "Sanctuary" and is supposed to contain their best work, so I figured I would try it out.

I was not disappointed. I am a new age music fan, and this is a unique new age group. Using voice as another instrument, the Adiemus singers offer fascinating lyrical and melodic textures to these songs, which are backed by orchestral arrangements and other ethnic sounds. I have played this disc for friends who usually believe the singers are singing in an African language.

In fact, it seems that Karl Jenkins composed this music in an effort to bring eclectic musical flavors together in a sort of musical fusion. There are ethnic rhythyms, chants, classical influences, soaring vocal arrangements, a variety of instruments, and light to heavy beats laced throughout this music.

This music is fascinating to hear. The listener can become mesmerized by the intricate sounds and musical landscapes presented by Karl Jenkins and his performers. This is the kind of disc you play loud on high-quality speakers so that you don't miss anything.

Or this disc is also an excellent selection to be played softly as background music during a social gathering. You are guaranteed to receive inquiries from people about the music because of its originality.

Free Music Review: The best of Adiemus - I want more
Hit: 5 Stars

The only thing lacking in this album were a few more tracks. Some of my favorites from Adiemus II and III were missing and they really deserved to be there. However for one who is looking to have a vast majority of the best of Adiemus, this is definately a MUST BUY. However, get the rest of them too. You cannot judge all the glory of Miriam Stockley's voice and Karl Jenkins' music just by this. You must have ALL of them to truely judge what beauty this is. I have been a fan of Adiemus since I first heard the original for the Delta Airlines commercial. Frantic searching finally cam up with the original Adiemus and I have all of them now. The rythims and hues in the music trancend style and open a new dimension in music. Indeed, a new catagory of music must be made for this material.

Free Music Review: More of the same
Hit: 2 Stars

If you saw a Delta Airlines commercial or took a flight in the 1990s with Delta, then you've heard at least the first song on Songs of Sanctuary (Adiemus). Unfortunately for me and other frequent flyers, listening to this album will likely bring back memories of sitting in a crowded plane in an uncomfortable seat waiting for takeoff. Adiemus could just as well be called the "Miriam Stockley Experience," for it is her vocals that make the distinctive sound of Adiemus. This is a collection from the first three albums. Like many New Age artists, Adiemus carves its own niche and then firmly stays there. Unfortunately, the music starts to run together. Its all very nice, but it all sounds the same. Groups such as Enya and Mike Oldfiled have discovered that they can try new things yet still retain their sound and fan base. I wonder when Karl will do the same, if ever? This would be a perfect introduction to Adiemus if you somehow missed the first album. Anyone who waited on the runway for takeoff has most likely heard most of if not all of Songs of Sanctuary.

Free Music Review: Soothing played soft. Dramatic played loud. Nice!
Hit: 4 Stars

Like other reviewers, I was familiar with the first cut (Adiemus) from the TV ad, but I had no idea where it had come from. I found out about this album through a reference in a review for a different CD with a rather similar style ("Libera", with incredibly fine boys' voices in a synth-heavy setting... highly recomended!). The concept is brilliant - world music stylings without the need to write lyrics! After all, when I hear a Brazilian or African or Gregorian chant album, I'm not getting the meaning of the lyrics. I'm getting the human voice as an instrument. Since it makes no difference to me what words are being sung, why not just use melodious nonsense words. It works perfectly here! There's a nice mix of styles, some of which work better than others. (The fact that I hit the "skip" button for a couple makes this a 4-star disc rather than a 5-star.) The vocals are very well done, frequently evocative of "exotic" cultures such as Bulgarian and South African.

Equally good as soft background music or cranked up loud when you're by yourself in the car.

Free Music Review: Adiemus - Perfect Peace on one CD
Hit: 4 Stars

Adiemus first entered my ears via several adverts and TV theme tunes. Everytime I heard their music I could only think 'God That's so beautiful.' It had a peaceful serenity but sensuous rhythm that immediately grabbed my senses. When I finally found out who these people were and bought their CD I was pleasantly surprised to discover that not all their songs sound the same and that the majority of them were good. This CD is a perfect introduction to Adiemus as it sets the standard for the rest of their releases. Just Go Buy It! It's just perfect after a tiring day at achool or work, or if you need to calm down for whatever reason. As stated above: It's pure peace on a CD
