Free Music Notes for Big OnesFree Music Review: A Real Rock And Roll Band Hit: 5 Stars
When Aerosmith releases new stuff, I know I can expect to hear some real rock and roll. No whiney, grungey, hard rock stuff with no character or presence. Character and presence are two of the top things this band has. They give us straight up no questions asked rock and roll. With music as dysmal as ever today, we need these type of artists more than ever. This type of music. This set covers the 80's period, as well as the early 90's stuff as well. It would've been nice to have the 70's stuff on here too. I guess you have to buy seperate. This set of songs chronicle the Boston band's incredible comeback in the mid 80's up to the early 90's. No other artist or band has had such a magnificent comeback. "Rag Doll" is a big rhythm catcher with an incredible catchy drum beat. "What It Takes" is a great power ballad that just may be one of the band's finer moments. The strong message song "Janie's Got A Gun" is here as well. There is a trio of songs here that sort of go together. Those songs being "Crazy", "Amazing", and "Cryin'". Some of the best tracks here are ones that aren't as well known as others. "The Other Side" and "Deuces Are Wild" are bouncy and rockin'. Perfect Aerosmith songs. Then there is "Walk On Water", the first track on the CD. It has a great catch. Then there is the big power ballad "Angel", which was their highest chart hit until "I Don't Wanna Miss A Thing" went to #1 in 1998. The guys are impecable rock and roll musicians. Steven Tyler is one of rock's most flashy and entertaining band leaders. Not to mention having one of the best rock and roll voices ever. Listen to "Dream On" and listen to how unbelieveably different his voice is. It's almost shocking. Aerosmith and their music aren't here to change the world. It's not here to cure cancer or to feed the poor. It's here to rock and entertain. To just be music. It doesn't need to be anything else. It's fun, it's catchy, it's rocking. That's all you need. I laugh when I hear young kids today bashing them or whoever. They were brought up on 90's music and the music of today. Not the best of stuff to be weaned on. With so many rock bands and artists today looking, acting, and singing the same way, Aerosmith and their ilk are a breath of fresh air. That someone out there is still doing it the way it should be. One hopes it continues for a long time. The music of today isn't giving much hope to the future. Long live Aerosmith. You guys keep rocking.
Free Music Review: The BEST ticket to Aerosmith! Hit: 5 Stars
While their latest CD, "Just Push Play", is heavy with a "modern rock" atmosphere and sound, and is geared more towards fans of today's rock, "Big Ones" is much more for their long-time fans. While it might be a tad harder to get into it than JPP, once you stick with it you'll realise that it's far deeper in comparison. Released in 1994, this CD includes the best songs from their post-rehab albums, "Permanent Vacation", "Pump" and "Get a Grip". It also has three new songs and a live version of the song "Dude (Looks Like a Lady). Nearly all the songs in this CD are worth listening to, which is obvious because all of their big hits from that period are right here. I find only two songs to be average Aerosmith fare, namely their new recordings "Walk on Water" and "Blind Man". Most of the others are just downright amazing, both lyrically and musically. "Cryin'" (my personal favourite), "Janie's Got a Gun", "Amazing", "Angel" (You've gotta love that guitar!), "Crazy" and "Ragdoll" are all favourites. Others such as "Love in an Elevator" (which is approximately fifty-fifty in music and vocals), "Eat the Rich", "The Other Side", "Dude (Looks Like a Lady)" and "Deuces are Wild" are also fun listening to and sometimes amusing (Especially the lyrics and the BURP! in Eat the Rich). "What it Takes" and "Livin' On the Edge" tend to drag on a bit, but they are still lengthy and solid rock songs. Songs like "Amazing", "Janie's Got a Gun" and "Angel" can sometimes even get a bit emotional! Can the same be said about most modern "hard" rock? Aerosmith is definitely one of the greatest rock bands around. The great thing is that they are still singing, and still have a few tricks up their expensive sleeves! The songs on "Big Ones" showcase the high points in their career, and their eventual rise to the rock 'n' roll hall of fame! Although they are probably best known among today's younger audience for 1998's "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing" (which I love), the strength of these songs is what helped them establish a firm fanbase after their downfall in the early 80s. While this CD may not appeal to fans of modern rock and probably fans of 70s Aerosmith, it still is the best way for new comers to get a plug-in. That's right people, big ones is truly big, in a big way!
Free Music Review: Doesn't miss a single. Truly the biggest! Hit: 5 Stars
"Big Ones" is surprisingly comprehensive for a set of hits from a group that couldn't stop cranking them out in that time period. Aerosmith is the best American rock band, period. It wasn't until the mid eighties that the really caught up with the rest of the world. The hits started cranking out on their "Permanent Vacation" album with cool rock like "Dude (Looks Like A Lady)", a very cleaver smack at make up laced heavy metals stars. I also can't forget the sensitive, sweet sounds of "Angel" (talk about your AC Top 40 stuff) and the unforgettable "Rag Doll" (Joe and Brad at his best guitar work not to mention a great drum part on behalf of Joey and thumping bass by Tom). The "Pump" tracks also rock hard. You got everything from the catchy horns of "The Other Side" to the painfully great love county type song "What It Takes". The ultimate "Pump" songs are Aerosmith's generally best ever from the mesmerizing story of "Janie's Got A Gun" to the party fest of "Love In An Elevator". Then comes the mixed bag of everything that is "Get A Grip". Everything from the breakup standards like "Cryin'" to the driving "Eat The Rich". Don't forget the new tracks "Walk On Water (sounds like old experimental Aero) and the hard rock wisdom of "Blind Man". The extra "Deuces Are Wild" is a big could have been hit from the group off of "The Beavis And Butthead Experience". The band really has it together here. Great party music with that's fun and with nice writing. It's not as big as some of their old Columbia stuff and not as gritty either. It's just the band playing their best and Steven singing his heart out. I think I like the "Pump" tracks the most and the "Grip" tracks are the least awesome (still really good though, just not as exciting to me). If you love hard rock, this set is really for you. The album is full of the best of the decade and is a lot better-played then hair band stuff.
Free Music Review: Aerosmith mach 3 : The Invincible Years Hit: 5 Stars
by the time the mid-1980's rolled around, many felt that Aerosmith were a once-great relic of the mid 1970's. They released four great albums between 1973-1976, but started with Draw The Line, it started turning on them. By the mid-1980's, Aerosmith had been long past their peak and they hadn't had a hit single in years. This all changed when they met Run DMC.Being smart and knowing when to strike when the iron is hot, Aerosmith came back with Permanent Vacation in 1987 on Geffen (their first Geffen album, Done With Mirrors, was extremely underrated, check it out). Dude (Looks Like A Lady) was the first single and went to #14, becoming their biggest hit in a decade. However, this comeback single was not a fluke, it became the first of 11 straight singles (every single one collected on here) to make the top 30 (Eat The Rich and Deuces Are Wild were both smash hits on rock radio, and Blind Man and Walk On Water were the new tracks, Blind Man peaked in the 40's and Walk On Water barely got noticed when released in early 1995). Aerosmith were not only hot during 1987-1994, but they were actually hotter than they were in the 1970's! Only 2 tracks (Rag Doll and Walk On Water) of the 15 recreate the gritty bluesy classic rock sound that Aerosmith perfected in the 1970's, so many fans of classic 70's Aerosmith aren't so fond of this "poppier" sound. However, for many of us who grew up in the 80's and early 90's, this is the Aerosmith we knew first. I hope one day that there will be a comprehensive 1973-1982 collection (instead of a ten track) of the Columbia years, but when it comes to the Geffen years of Aerosmith, this is as good as it gets. The 2-disc "Young Lust" collection includes way too much from just 4 albums that it'd be cheaper to just go and buy the 4 albums seperately. BIG ONES is a Greatest Hits collection that delivers, every track on the album was a hit in some form or another, and there's nothing from 87-93 that's missing.
Free Music Review: Timeless Ones Hit: 5 Stars
After making such classic hits as "Dream On", "Walk This Way", and "Sweet Emotion" that pretty much guaranteed Aerosmith a spot in the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame already, they weren't satisfied. In 1987, Aerosmith decided to make one last album and then retire for good, hence the title of the album, Permanent Vacation. It spawned their biggest success ever with the likes of "Rag Doll", one of the best power ballads of all time, "Angel", etc. Fortunately for their millions of fans, Aerosmith decided to call off the 'permanent vacation' and keep producing great rock hits all the way through the 90's and up to today. Big Ones is a collection of their most successful songs from 1987 to 1994, and what a collection it is! All the hits from the late 80's are here, along with all the great ones that showed their faces in the early 90's, such as "Crazy", the Grammy winning song that has some of Steven Tyler's best vocals ever, "Janie's Got A Gun", the overly catchy "Love In An Elevator", and all the others, such as "Cryin'", "Amazing", and "The Other Side." With a track listing like that, it's easy to see why many would include Big Ones on their list of favorite Greatest Hits albums. Of the fifteen songs, not one of them is a dud or filler, so to call it a must-buy for rock or Aerosmith fans is an understatement. But, as cliched as the statement is, I'll say it anyway. BUY IT NOW! IT'S A MUST HAVE!
