Free Music Notes for Honkin' On Bobo

Free Music Review: ROOTS
Hit: 5 Stars

Honkin' On Bobo is Aerosmith's long-promised "roots" album where they return to their original bluesy sound. And it exceeds all expectations! As a long time Aerosmith fan who is into both their gritty rocky earlier sound in the 70's and the more commercially pop-orientated sound since the late 80's, hearing this album really made me realize how absent their classic style has been for a long time. But these songs really bring back the band's original essence. Gone are the radio friendly pop-rock numbers and ballads, and back are the classic amazing guitar riffs by Joe Perry, and Steven Tyler squealing into the microphone just like back in the day. The cd is made up of mostly covers of blues songs by their original influences but with their own hooks and classic Aerosmith sound and attitude added. The one exception is probably track 7 "The Grind", which sounds kinda on par with Crazy and Cryin'. But even as a ballady number it still fits in well with the blues vibe. The album as a whole would easily fit nicely in between Rocks and Toys in The Attic. If you're a fan of the old-school Aerosmith, get it. You will not be disappointed as this contains all the elements of their sound back in the day. If you're only more familiar with their pop-rock sound from the I Don't Want To Miss A Thing era, get it and educate yourself...cos THIS is who Aerosmith are!

Free Music Review: What I've Been Waiting Ten Years For
Hit: 5 Stars

Ten years ago I thought it would be great if Aerosmith made a blues album. They were a rock band, but they had that blues influence that made them so addictive. Now, this album...it's like breaking into Steven Tyler's basement and opening an old chest and finding a stash of unreleased songs from the seventies. Granted they are mostly covers, but so were many of Aerosmith's early songs. The album reminds me of some of their gritty earlier works - Sh*thouse shuffle, Lord of the Thighs, and Walkin' the Dog. It was stuff they played in Frat houses for $100 and a keg of beer.

Here, they smack you in the face and say 'Rock came from blues and we'll prove it -- listen to this!'. As a local I spent many nights in gritty blues clubs in and around Boston - roadhouses where the bartender is drinking *and* playing bass with the house band on stage between pulling pints for customers. They would fit right in. The bad boys from Boston know how to jam - songs like 'Way Way Down' and 'Never Loved A Girl' really blew me away. If you don't believe me, buy Pandora's box and this album. Some of their best stuff never got played on the radio. Does this appeal to the mainstream? Who cares. They did it with their own instantly recognizable sound. It's the blues, and it's wonderful.

Free Music Review: The purist Aerosmith in years
Hit: 5 Stars

First impression, strange name, but one of the best covers of all time, and the album is as advertised, Tyler puts his harp to good use in most songs on this album. Although the album contains 11 covers and only one original it sounds more like Aerosmith than Just Push Play did. Billed as an album where 'Aerosmith does the blues' do not expect a blues record. It is more closely comparible to the bands work in the 70s when you could still hear there obvious blues influences. Many of the tracks covered here are obscure as well, so the material sounds fresh and new.

The songs range from rockers like the first single Baby Please Don't Go and Shame Shame Shame to slower blues tunes such as Back Back Train sung by Joe Perry no less. In fact Perry lends lead vocals to two tracks on the album with the voice of the talented Tracy Bonham backing him up. This album is a welcome surprise from start to finish, fans of old Aerosmith will not be disappointed and fans of new Aerosmith will be introduced to a whole new world, with no boring power ballads (as good as Aerosmith does them) to break the mood.

In short, even if you haven't bought an Aerosmith album in years, this is the one to help renew your faith in the greatest Rock and Roll band of our time.

Free Music Review: Aerosmith's new blues album is downright gritty & raw
Hit: 5 Stars

Simply put...this is a great album. This is the way Aerosmith is meant to be heard: raw, loud, bluesy, uninhibited and with Jack Douglas producing! The band is in top form, and have once again proven why they're one of the most successful bands around today. Yeah, I like "Cryin", "Amazing" "Dream On" and "Rag Doll" etc. etc. etc, but Aerosmith is a blues-based band, and when they do the blues, they sound their best! If you like Aerosmith...especially 1970s Aerosmith, then I highly suggest buying this album. Hopefully this will propel other classic rock acts (i.e. The Stones) to do a blues album. If you like this disc, and want to buy another recent release by a classic rock group, pick-up Allman Brothers Band "Hittin the Note"...I also suggest Allman Brothers Band "Live at the Fillmore East" Derek & the Dominoes "Live at the Fillmore East" and even the Rolling Stones "Exile on Main Street."

Free Music Review: This should have been Just Push Play
Hit: 5 Stars

I usually don't get CD's. And when I do get CD's, I usually wait until three or four hits come off of it. However, I am a huge Aerosmith fan. So, when my local CD store was selling CDs for 9.99 a pop, I picked this CD up. I had heard of Honkin on Bobo and decided to give the CD a shot.

I put the CD in and just listened to it. It was a very rockin CD with a blues feel. I just listened and 40 some minutes later, the CD player stopped. I had just listened to the whole CD nonstop and for the first time, I didn't notice it or skip a track. This is a great CD. Aerosmith has shown they are truly one of the greatest rock acts ever. My favorite tracks on this CD are "Baby, Please Don't Go", "Never Loved A Girl", "Back Back Train", "You Gotta Move", and "Stop Messin' Around". If you are a fan of Aerosmith, blues, or just want to hear a great piece of music, pick up Honkin' On Bobo.
