Free Music Review: Rap ain't dead

Aesop rock is so refreshing blah blah blah. There really isn't nothing else that haven't been said before, because we all know that today's commerical rap is ______. And oh yes, it's ______ true. Aesop Rock kicks a load of @$$ compared to soulja boy.
I think I'm going to keep this one a bit short. First off, just listen to the way this guy spits out rhymes. At times abstract, others concise and to the point. There's plenty of lines I can't figure out, but it's still compelling and fun to listen to. Love some of the insight that he gives on Save Yourself. Hip Hop isn't dead. It's just underground. It's a dead end to even try to save the airwaves from p diddy. I also like his delivery, even though at first I found his voice unappealing. But he delivers it in a indescribable attitude that I can't quite put my finger on. All in all, you must lend an ear to this guy.
BUt that's not the only thing you should lend an ear to. Just check out some of those soundscapes. They really aren't just simple beats or backing. They are full of strings (in a lot of different ways, like harps and those strings that back No Regrets), flutes, woodwinds, harps (check out Save Yourself), twinkling bells, and a bunch of other stuff. They are very slow and rather beautiful (that harp in No Regrets), and are perfectly balanced between the soundscapes and the rhymes. Blockhead (currently signed on Ninja Tune! You know...the label with Amon Tobin) does the most production on here, and this guy has skills. He does make instrumental albums on Ninja Tune, so Aesop Rock fans might want to check it out.
Hip Hop will live on. It's not dead. Listen to Aesop Rock. IT'S NOT DEAD. And I couldn't be happier, as many others are supporting one of the genres that stupid "rawk" fanatics will never get.
Labor Days Poster
Aesop Rock doesn't try to contend with rap music's commercial villains. Instead, on Labor Days, his first release for the Def Jux label, Aesop ignores the mainstream and displays an unshakable confidence rarely seen in independent hip-hop. Although a staccato, Dadaist delivery is his trademark, subsequent listens reveal his storytelling gifts and rhyme structures to be thick with purpose. There's also a sensitivity only hinted at on Float, his first mass release. On "Daylight," he informs, "Life is not a bitch / Life's a beautiful woman," while "No Regrets" tells the life story of a woman who only communicated through her drawings until her death in a nursing home. Thanks to production by Omega One, Blockhead, and Aesop himself, Labor Days is built upon strings, loping bass lines, nodding beats, and expert programming.
