Free Music Review: This Cuban is thrilled w/this Cuban album. Read my review
Hit: 5 Stars

This album is a work of art. It is only rivaled by its companion albums, "Buena Vista Social Club", and "Introducing Ruben Gonzalez". I would strongly recommend buying all three and listening to them in succession, although each is excellent in its own right. "Afro-Cuban All-Stars" is a collection of old standards, mostly from the Cuba of the 30's, 40's, and 50's. Although to many (including this Cuban-american) that Cuba is gone, what with the political scene such as it is now under Castro, the music IS ALIVE, as this album definitely proves. Lush, big band sounds, impeccable singing by such greats as Ibrahim Ferrer and Manuel Puntillita Licea, combine to paint a vivid musical picture that practically includes the tropical aroma of the island itself. The first track, "Amor Verdadero", is a "son" that tells an unforgettable story of a man and his relationship with his mother which sustained him during a traumatic life. "Habana del Este" has a beautifully nostalgic, melancholy feel to it that reminds one of simpler, more romantic times of yesteryear. Yet tracks like, "Pio Mentiroso" leave one with a desire to jump up and dance, shyness be damned. Take it from this Cuban, this is the album to get, whatever your culture, whatever your taste. You'll love it.

Free Music Review: Perfection at its Finest
Hit: 5 Stars

Rarely do you run across such an incredible group of such masterful musicians. This was true for Miles, Art Blakey, John Coltrane, Charles Mingus, and The Art Ensemble of Chicago. Every musician in these ensembles were leaders and masters of the music themselves and frequenly went on to be leaders.

These groups as well as The Afro Cuban All-Stars on this recording especially are incredible. I have been listening to this CD over and over and no matter how many times you listen to this great music you always hear something new. It is amazing, Monk's music has this quality as well as Cecil Taylor. This is one of the finest CDs I have heard. From the piano, timbales, trombonists, trumpets, bassist, vocalists; it is frankly beyond verbal description.

Each piece is so complete. This music is the work of geniuses. It is the same wonderment that one would have if you just stood at "The Night Watch". No matter how many times you look at it you still marvel. "How could someone create sometime so infinite and yet so accessible?" The only element that could surpass this is a live concert. This is a beautiful, splendid, masterpiece!!

Free Music Review: Thank you, Juan de Marcos
Hit: 5 Stars

From start to finish, this CD is one of the most enjoyable that I own. It's a class act and it will MAKE YOU DANCE, BABY!!!

Juan de Marcos González dedicated this album to "Don Rubén González, genius of Cuban piano". How appropriate! In addition to Rubén, the CD features Manuel Mirabal (one of the greatest trumpet players I have ever heard), Demetrio Muñiz (trombone), Ibrahim Ferrer (vocals) and Orlando López (bass).

Juan de Marcos González, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your huge role in promoting both traditional and modern Cuban music, and particularly for your energetic efforts to share this wonderful treasure with the world beyond Cuba's borders. Were it not for you, those of us in the United States might still be deprived of the talent of Ibrahim Ferrer, Rubén González, Manuel Mirabal and so many others.

Like an unofficial Cuban embassador to the world, you travel the globe with a musical message that has to improve relations.

Thank you, my friend.

Free Music Review: Afro-cuban music 101: Where to begin
Hit: 5 Stars

A toda le cuba le gust is one of the first in an evergrowing collection of recent work by the afro cuban all stars. If you've seen or heard about the Buena vist social club you know the backsoty of many of these artists. After listeiing to this Cd it's almost impossible to believe that many of these artists hadn't played in over 40 years prior to this collection. But what about the music, all I can say is excellente'. From the title track Amor Verdadero on through to Elube Chango' I found all of the songs to be vibrant, multilayered and entertaining. Even thought my spanish is lousy at best I was compelled to try and sing along. (there are english translation to the songs in the booklet that accompanies this CD) The Afro cuban All stars sound like they haven't lost a step in fact they sound as though they have been recording together all of their lives. Overall this is an excellent CD to begin or enrich your collection of Afro cuban music. Also recommended : Introducing Reuben Gonzelez and Cuban counterpoint among others.

Free Music Review: This is the world's most danceable music!
Hit: 5 Stars

I bought this album because the group is coming to the Meyerhoff Symphony Hall in Baltimore in March of 2000. I'm a telemarketer and wanted to know what they sounded like so I could pitch them. I've also been to Cuba and really enjoyed the music there. The verdict: This is a fabulous album and I've been raving about it and about the group to my patrons ever since. I predict that people will be dancing in the aisles at the Meyerhoff! It is impossible to sit still while listening to it; even my totally nonmusical sister was dancing to it. (I'm still in shock about that!) I've also just seen the Buena Vista Social Club film about Ry Cooder's trip to Cuba to pull that group together. I was very pleased to see some of the same people are also members of the Afro-Cuban All Stars: the great pianist Ruben Gonzalez, and 90+ year old vocalist Ibrahim Ferrer (who looks 70, if a day.) I can't wait to see them in person. Anyone who likes world music will love this CD. I guarantee it!
