I was lucky enough to get an early copy of The Forgotten Arm, so I've been working through the phases of falling completely in love with another Aimee Mann recording. First, its always a little like meeting someone who you haven't seen in a while--nothing is quite how you remember it, and this disc particularly is not like previous Aimee Mann discs. But the stripped down sound works well here, and her singing has never been better. It is always the songs, though, that knock me out in the end. The first to grab me was "Little Bombs" which is about as perfect as a song can be. Then, one by one, the others took hold: "Video" with its jagged catchy lyric, "I Can't Get My Head Around It" with the traditional melancholy Aimee mismatched perfectly with an upbeat melody, and perhaps best of all, the blunt "Clean up For Christmas" which actually managed to break my heart.
