Which is part of the reason why I've always tended to get irked whenever I hear some jerk saying that people in such-and-such a country can't write "good" music to save their soul. I mean, how fair IS that? Just because someone lives in a different area other than the one which gave that person their favourite acts doesn't mean that they are any less gifted.

And how many times have I heard know-it-alls go on about how people in France supposedly can't write good popular music?

Preposterous, I would always answer. I'm no expert on French culture, but I do know that in all fairness I expect them to have their fair share of artistic geniuses as much as any other area of the world. And besides... I mean, come ON, we're talking about PARIS, for pete's sake! Some of the most important and wonderful art ever created came from there! So why not music, too? Just relax and wait, I would suggest. Wait and see. Someday the ignorant will realize that there are musical geniuses in France too just waiting to be discovered.

Which brings me to Air. I'm tempted to christen them the Parisian equivalent of a Lennon/McCartney songwriting team, but I don't know the French music scene that well yet. Maybe there are others out there considered more important, maybe not. I don't know. But what I *do* know is this--no matter what music or what nationality you compare them to, Air are truly musical geniuses. The type that rarely appear anymore these days. And Paris's latest artistic gift to the world.

How can I praise this disc? To do so would take far more words that I'm allowed here. Let's just suffice it to say that Air deserve to go down with all the rest of the greats in modern music history. And one day (if not already) they will become every bit as important an influence in their own right.

While the two bonus tracks included here ("Californie" and "Brakes On") do jar you out of the soft and hypnotic mood the rest of the disc creates so well, I wouldn't want to be without them. They are every bit as clever and marvelously crafted, just brisker is all. It just doesn't get better than this.

Paris has every right to feel proud of Air. And now that both they and acts such as Daft Punk are finally getting their international spotlights, I tingle in excitement with anticipation... if acts such as Air are any hint, then imagine all the equally strong talent in France waiting to follow them into our collective international consciousness. At a time when all too many USA and UK acts have resorted to formula, creativity in Paris is apparently thriving and our pals out there can provide lots of ultracool fun and tripouts to rescue our brains from the N'Syncs and cutesy-poo fluff-acts dominating our current musical culture so badly.
