Akimbos' latest record is a departure from the sound we all knew them for. This record was released by Neurosis' Neurot Recordings, and after listening to it I realized how well it fit in with the roster of such label. It is also a concept album about a string of ferocious and deadly shark attacks off the coast of New Jersey at the beginning of the last century.
I would describe the sound of this record as sludged-out progressive hardcore record, with a huge massive sound with lots of high tempo hardcore parts and long shape shifting songs.
I loved every bit of this beast, and I highly recommend it both to any fans of classic hardcore who are bored by the sameness of most hardcore releases nowadays, and also to anyone who likes experimental heavy music like Neurosis, Godflesh and the such. Seriously this thing has massive grooves, epic breakdowns and mosh parts and eerie and twisted interludes. Great record.
