Free Music Review: Pretty representative of Al B. Sure!'s career

I have to agree with mediaagent on the light-skinned conspiracy theory -- that didn't hurt Al B. Sure!'s career. His first album "In Effect Mode" sold two million copies and produced four top three singles on the Billboard R&B Singles charts ("Nite and Day" and "Off on Your Own (Girl) reaching No. 1). His second album "Private Times ... and the Whole 9!" went gold and produced two top four singles ("Misunderstanding" went No. 1). And though his final album didn't do particularly well, "Right Now" was a No. 1 single.
IMO, the following killed Al B. Sure!'s career:
1.) The incredible sameness of his songs. Virtually every ballad on "In Effect Mode" sounded the same, and so did every uptempo song except "If I'm Not Your Lover." It was as if he used the same drum programming and keyboarding sequence and merely changed the words. The same thing for most of "Private Times."
2.) Poor single selection and radio airplay killed momentum for "Private Times" (IMO, his best album). The duet with Diana Ross ("No Matter What You Do") reached the top five more out of Al B. Sure!'s momentum when IMO it was the weakest song on his album. His remake of The Eagles' "Hotel California" received airplay despite being another weak song. "Had Enuf?" was a fine song, but the single remix version was actually weaker than the original verison. If it were up to me, songs like "Just for the Moment," "So Special" and "Channel J" would have been my single selection after "Misunderstanding."
3.) As mediaagent said, Al B. Sure!'s less-than-impressive vocal performance on "Oprah" revealed he was a marginal singer, thus the ongoing rap he never shaked.
Most of the New Jack Swing-era artists from that period -- GUY, Bobby Brown, Bell Biv DeVoe, Chuckii Booker, TROOP, etc. -- saw drastically slower sales numbers or disappeared circa 1992-93 as the soul music scene became more sexually aggressive and rap-derivative, so Al B. Sure! is not alone in that regard. I would say those factors I mentioned plus the changing music scene had far more bearing than Al B. Sure!'s complexion (as well as for the fate of Christopher Williams, a comparably less-successful New Jack Swing artist).
That all said, this set is pretty representative of his career, though I may have added his collaboration with Al Green ("As Long as We're Together") and his remake of Green's "I'm Still in Love with You" from the "Above the Rim" soundtrack.
