Free Music Review: Every Serious Al Bowlly Collector Should Own This Set

This issue of this 3-CD set in 2003 was a milestone. Here are 76 sides spanning Al Bowlly's career from 1928, when he arrived in England, to his untimely death in 1941. The first disc covers The Formative Years (1928-1932) and takes in recordings with Fred Elizalde, Howard Godfrey, Jay Wilbur, Marius B. Winter, the Savoy Hotel Orpheans, Arthur Lally, Roy Fox. and the New Mayfair Dance Orchestra (Ray Noble).

The second disc is titled "UK To The USA And Back Again" and, in addition to those mentioned already, brings in Lew Stone, Monia Liter, Victor Young, Ray Noble's American Orchestra, and Ronnie Munro.

The third disc is "The Final Years" (1938-1941) which brings in also the Al Bowlly Remembers medley, Geraldo, Maurice Winnick, Ken "Snakehips" Johnson & his West Indian Dance Orchestra (the two Shakespeare sonnets), and duets with Jimmy Mesene (including an unissued take of "Nicky The Greek").

Remastering is excellent and consistent, despite the variety of source material, and there are full discographical details for each disc. At something approaching four hours playing time, this set should be snaffled whilst it's still available.
