Free Music Notes for Consequence of ChaosFree Music Review: Good, solid album......but not a stand-out favorite Hit: 3 Stars
DiMeola is one of those guys who really makes you miss the '70s. This is a good album. He still plays guitar very, very well. But this album lacks the vision, purpose, power, integrity and ingenuity of any of his classic '70s solo albums such as "Casino" or the brilliant (his best) "Elegant Gypsy". And OF COURSE, it doesn't begin to approach the awesome beauty of his work with Chick Corea's '70s fusion band Return to Forever on albums such as "Where Have I Known You Before" or the spectacular, incomparable "Romantic Warrior". It was nice to see some of his old friends like Chick Corea, Steve Gadd and Mingo Lewis join him on this album. Songs tend to be short and choppy. There are some interesting melodies and rhythmic devices, enough to get your attention. But, nothing really grabs you with any profound inspiration. DiMeola used to be filled with profound inspiration. It's a pleasant stab at injecting a dose of old fusion with more modern jazz. There is some pleasant music here, but nothing stands out. Nice album.........but it lacks luster.
Free Music Review: Not really "Electric" ....Al..... Hit: 3 Stars
Musically wise this album rates 5 stars, great musicianship all around from every one. However a "Return to solid body electric guitar" it is not. Which for me was rather a let down. I was really hoping for some fast hard paced playing as a refreshing change from the over all style of his last several albums. Still very much into the "Flamenco" style only some of it is played on an electric guitar rather than acoustic. For any one expecting something along the lines of "Kiss My Axe" or some of his earlier playing you are not going to find much here. There are fleeting moments of typical Di Meola 64th note style, but over all this is similar to his last several albums...which are great...just don't expect lots of heavy electric guitar or blazing riffs like the earlier days. If you are a fan already you will like it. Di Meola is one of the finest players alive today.
Free Music Review: Sounds good Hit: 3 Stars
What I love about Al is his ability to kick you in the teeth from time to time. This album has some, but not nearly the fire of Kiss My Axe. If you are looking for gratuitous wanking, Kiss My Axe is your best bet. I still crank that up in my car periodically. This album fits with Al's other work nicely. He stays true to his strengths.
Free Music Review: Consequence of Chaos by Al Di Meola Hit: 3 Stars
Not bad, but not one of his best.....
Free Music Review: Hopeless Hit: 2 Stars
Take the worst of world jazz and combine it with clueless guitar heroics and you have Consequence of Chaos.
First of all, what does the title of this disc mean? Certainly it fails to resonate with this highly arranged and suffocatingly sterile music. What is it, then? You tell me.
Next, despite Al Di Meola's undeniable monster chops--sadly seldom put to any kind of decent (or even serviceable) use--there's not even one attractive song vehicle.
Third, over half the numbers are completely vitiated by what must be the world's cheesiest synth stylings ever.
Really, this music is insufferable. It proceeds along lines of complete predictability. It absolutely depends on the most hackneyed melodic, chordal, and rhythmic devices, brashly deployed for greatest bombastic effect.
If you dig hyped up wannabe world jazz, go for it.
But don't blame me if you hate it: I warned ya.
*1/2.
