Free Music Notes for George Benson and Al Jarreau - Givin' It Up

Free Music Review: Best collaborative effort between 2 jazz greats!!
Hit: 5 Stars

I love this CD, I knew it would be an excellent choice and could not wait for the drop date!

Free Music Review: The wrong song won the Grammy!
Hit: 4 Stars

With so many guest artists on this disc, the release reminds one of those big-budgeted 80's albums produced by Quincy Jones and featuring all of his friends and neighbors. Benson and Jarreau are so individually gifted that the special appearances were not necessary but such additions stay with the current trend of star cameos.

As far as the songs go, the covers are well done, adding intriguing changes in the two songs ("Breezin" and "'Mornin'") made famous by Benson and Jarreau, respectively. Besides those two, there are other "re-workings" that are soulfully jazzy, especially "Summer Breeze" and John Legend's "Ordinary People." The final selection, "Bring It on Home to Me" features an impressive Paul McCartney on lead vocals.

Though "God Bless the Child," with Jill Scott adding her distinctive style on vocals, won last year's Grammy for best traditional R & B performance, it is "Let it Rain," with Patti Austin that should've taken home the coveted prize. The singer provides the perfect compliment to Jarreau's singing and Benson's guitar licks.

This song is truly what R & B is all about!

Free Music Review: Two of the greatest for the price of one
Hit: 4 Stars

This is a really cool album. Two of the greatest musicians performing together. My expectations were high, and I have to say that they guys almost made it all the way. They are performing a few of each other's greatest hits and my only reservation is that the recordings are just a tad too close to the original recordings. I was expecting that they would add a little more of their own personality to each other's songs. But hey, this is still good stuff and everyone who is a fan of either Benson or Jarreau (or both) should buy this album.
And - having Sir Paul McCartney guest-starring on the album's last track is just sooo great!

Free Music Review: Givin' It Up
Hit: 4 Stars

I was disappointed when I first played this CD. Then I replayed it again and again. It's not the best work of either George Benson or Al Jarreau. I would have liked this CD better if Al would have done more than just sing background or just did his "scat" thing. Same goes for George - I would have preferred to hear more of George's voice.
