Free Music Review: Ms. Nash may need to get her ears checked out!
Hit: 5 Stars

Before the 1980s, the stigma around bands in country music was that they would have their share of success, then break up due to creative differences. But when Alabama burst on the scene in 1980, they were determined to disprove that tradition, and 20 years later, they're still working to do that. Even after 42 #1 hits, 60 million records sold, and winning Entertainer of the Year no less than 5 times, Alabama has still kept its nose to the grindstone, and contrary to what Alanna Nash says, WHEN IT ALL GOES SOUTH is not just Alabama's best album in years, but one of their best overall. The general consensus has been that Nash's "review" of the album was harsh and unfeeling. I should add "unjournalistic" to that description. It's one thing to say an album is unsatisfactory from an objective, critical standpoint, but to all-out bash Alabama and their two decades of hard work is just crossing the line. For a potential journalist, it's enough to make my skin crawl. WHEN IT ALL GOES SOUTH shows Alabama's career has done anything but that. There's already a controversy brewing about the title track and its supposedly pro-Rebel sentiments. But coming from Alabama, who are certainly not racists in the slightest, it's really a tribute to the laid-back spirit of living in the South. Why else would Alabama have collaborated with Lionel Richie on his song "Deep River Woman" back in 1986? So my final opinion on the title track is that at a time when even the most rigidly Southern states in the Union are taking down their Rebel flags, maybe the time has come to play a song like "When It All Goes South" as a good-intentioned party anthem, and not a salute to GONE WITH THE WIND-era racism. But enough of my blathering. WHEN IT ALL GOES SOUTH proves Alabama is still ahead of the game in country music even as it goes through its current identity crisis. Alabama always flirted with pop music without fully diving into it, and this is proven with the guest spots on here. Canadian songstress Jann Arden contributes some romanticism to "Will You Marry Me", and her voice and Randy Owen's turn out to be the Marvin and Tammy of country music. It's great to hear from Christopher Cross again after almost a decade in obscurity. "Love Remains" is a lot like Alabama's work with Lionel Richie: a strange pairing that surprisingly goes off with flying colors. Other songs on WHEN IT ALL GOES SOUTH like "Wonderful Waste Of Time", "Reinvent The Wheel" and "You Only Paint The Picture Once" add a taste of cleverness and intelligence to country music, as if it needed any already. Songs like "The Woman He Loves", "I Can't Love You Any Less" and "I Can't Hide My Heart" show Alabama's wonderful way with ballads, and they're certainly their most romantic since "Face to Face" from 1988. With country music being dominated by the teen explosion that has engulfed pop music for years, proven veterans like Alabama would be put out to pasture most likely. But they have continued to spawn #1 hits on the country charts out the wazoo even now, and WHEN IT ALL GOES SOUTH is filled with possible chart toppers that could extend Alabama's already impressive record. As for Ms. Nash, the next time she reviews a CD, she should listen to it closely, maybe even twice, before passing judgement on it.

When It All Goes South Poster

Alabama's gritty, Memphis-style 23rd album. Features The Woman He Loves; I Can't Hide My Heart, and Love Remains
Having racked up 42 No. 1 hits and 22 albums from 1980 to 2000, the group Alabama declares its newest goal for 2001: "To create a Grammy quality album," according to their bio. Well, folks, When It All Goes South strives mightily to be a contender, but it's such a lightweight it couldn't crawl into the ring. With the help of seven (!) producers, Randy Owen and company do sound rejuvenated, borrowing stylistic techniques from modern R&B and updating their overall approach for the millennium. But Alabama, a bar-band that went farther than it ever should have, ran out of creative juice long, long ago. And bringing in Jann Arden and Christopher Cross--rather odd-choice guests--doesn't do anything to reverse that. While the group occasionally works a decent rhythm song into the mix, their lyrics seldom rise above empty platitudes. Want proof? Here's their new take on Dixie from the title song: "Get yourself some rebel pride... One day the South's gonna rise again." To be sure, When It All Goes South is aptly named. It has boys, it has. --Alanna Nash
