Free Music Notes for Miss Saigon (Original 1989 London Cast)Free Music Review: FANTASTIC! Hit: 5 Stars
Miss Saigon is the best musical I have ever seen and this is the best recording of it. The score is so perfect. It's genius. One song is better than the next. Keith Burns is a little more "evil" than the semi-sensitive Thuys that followed after he left the show but his voice is good. Peter Polycarpou has a powerful Bui-Doi, but he's not phenomenal. I think John's character change (white to black) affects my judgement of Peter because I look for a different kind of voice in Johns. Claire Moore has an excellent voice. Her Ellen has such dignity and it's a hard role to pull of but she does it beautifully! I don't see the huge deal with Johnothon Pryce. I don't see him as the Engineer. His voice is good, but not what I look for in his character. Simon Bowman has a defined vibratto which makes his voice very distinct, though too nasally at times. His Chris is very sensitive. Lea Salonga is what gives this CD three out of its five stars. Her voice is perfect and her interpretation of Kim unsurpassed. Her acting skills are otherworldly but it is her voice that sends chills down my spine. Anyone who hears this will fall in love with her voice.

The 1989 Original London Cast Recording of Miss Saigon is absolutely amazing!!! I have never seen the show, but I have wanted to for a long time - I was actually supposed to see it with my family when I was about 12, but I ended up being sick so they went without me (and unfortunately, it is now no longer on broadway). Listening to this soundtrack, however, I feel like I am there. The music is so powerful and captivating. (And thankfully, the cd insert provides the storyline with the lyrics so I was able to understand what was going on when things were not exactly clear - I listened once through without looking at the cd insert and it was amazing, but then I listened again following along and it was even more amazing.) The storyline is heart-wrenching and powerful (very classic of Alain Boubil and Claude-Michel Schonberg (at least in my opinion)), and it is brought home with the passion in the voices of the cast. It made me wish I could take a time machine to London in 1989 so I could see this live. I am now still praying that there will be a revival on broadway (and I can only hope that there will be a cast even half as amazing as the original london cast).
Free Music Review: One of the Greatest Contemporary Musicals Hit: 5 Stars
Miss Saigon succeeded in getting me hooked on musicals in general, and it's easily one of my favorites. After having seen the American tour and listened to the original cast recording several times, I would have to say the cast recording is better. Not only does the musical incorporate history, it tells of a story of tragic love that was basically doomed from the beginning. The cd offers powerful duets by Lea Salonga and Simon Bowman including: "Sun and Moon" and "The Last Night of the World." It also features Jonathan Pryce as The Engineer, and his voice is quite possibly the most original on the recording. Although sometimes overlooked, Peter Polycarpou that plays John, a friend of the leading male Chris, does an excellent job vocally as well. Bui-doi is, in my opinion, the most powerful and moving song throughout the entire recording. Other songs like "I Still Believe" and "Her or Me" also offer variety and with the songs alone you can get nearly the entire storyline without even having to see the musical. Although, I would strongly reccomend checking out the musical if it is ever coming to a town nearby. You won't be disappointed.
Free Music Review: Great musical! Hit: 5 Stars
A decade and a half after its opening in London and on Broadway, Miss Saigon's music and the story remain as captivating and as powerful as ever, and I'm not surprised that different productions remain running strong in many parts of the world.
The selling point of this particular album, however, is undoubtedly its star, Lea Salonga, whose pure, innocent, yet powerful voice captures the true emotions of Kim. Although seeing Ms. Salonga perform live is a hundred times better, her performance in this 'mini-recording' remains unmatched (the 1995 Studio Cast Recording's Joanna Ampil had potential, but was very inconsistent; I've seen nine other productions and none of their Kims even comes close).
The Original London Cast Recording is the definitive CD (even the supporting cast vocals are much better than the Complete Recording and the numerous CDs featuring selections of various Miss Saigon songs out there).
Free Music Review: This CD deserves more than 5 stars Hit: 5 Stars
Lea Salonga will alwaize be the best Kim ever. This soundtrack is so beautiful. My aunt introduced me to musicals, Miss Saigon *the original cast recording* in particular, when i was seven years old. I'm fifteen years old now, and i've loved it since then. We used to lip-synch to the songs, and in this way, i learned every word to every song and all the semi-dialogue in between. This recording really has a special place in my heart and brings back great memories, not to mention that it also draws out intense emotions. Lea Salonga represents the Filipino culture so well by her love of singing and her incredible voice, and the rest of the cast is amazing. Jonathan Pryce completely caputres the essence of the sleazeball engineer, and all the songs are so moving. I was fortunate enough to watch the production of Miss Saigon when it came to Seattle two years ago, and it will alwaize be my favorite musical. :)
