Free Music Notes for Miss Saigon (Original 1989 London Cast)Free Music Review: A Beautiful and Touching Story Hit: 5 Stars
This musical, penned by two amazing musical geniuses, is unparalleled in feeling, emotion, and striking the right tone about a very turbulent period in my generation's history. The story is a love story, a tragedy, and a telling indictment of the 70's American dream all in one. But, above all, it contains some of the most beautiful melodies and lyrics, as well as a remarkably haunting song in "Bui Doi". The several duets sang by Simon Bowman and Lea Salonga are so beautiful and even magical. The original cast did a remarkable job bringing the words and music to life. I saw this show shortly after it opened in 1989 in London and have listened to the music regularly since then. Of the 75+ musicals I have seen in my life, this is one of the 3 best. I recommend this soundtrack to everyone who enjoys show music and "Bui Doi" as one of the most haunting and emotional songs I have ever heard.
Free Music Review: Lea Salonga, the best Kim Hit: 5 Stars
I recommend this to everyone who enjoys musicals. Avid fans of the show as well as those who are casual listeners will surely enjoy this. There are lots of great and catchy songs in here. I particularly like Sun and Moon and I Still Believe. Lea Salonga was fantastic definitely the stand out among the singers. Her voice is just sweet particularly in the beginning of Sun and Moon (You are sunlight and I moon, joined by the gods of fortune...) Uhh, her voice just fits perfectly in that song. As for Simon Bowman, I'm a little annoyed by his voice. But still its fine. Jonathan Pryce didn't do much singing but you can feel the sarcasm in his voice. Other notable songs: The Last Night of the world (of course), Movie in My Mind, Please, I'd Give My life For You, Bui-doi, The Fall of Saigon (you cant help but just want to see what's happening in the song) Buy this, you're guaranteed hours of musical pleasure. Grade= A
Free Music Review: from a future Kim in NY Hit: 5 Stars
I'm 13, and i first saw Miss Saigon in NYC, and i didn't really take it in. a few weeks after i got back, i realized that it was sooooo great and i just HAD to get it. Lea Salonga is fantastic, i just adore her! To "a music fan in mt. pleasant", HOW CAN YOU DESCRIBE LEA SALONGA AS A WHINEY, PETULANT CHILD? grrrr... Simon Bowman is also great, and he's phenomenal w/ Lea. A little too much vibratto, though. Claire Moore is pretty good, but nothing really special(i wouldn't have got the CD to hear her)and a bit too old-sounding.. Keith Burns is wonderful as Thuy in a rather sinister way, Peter Polycarpou gives you an image of a real GI, and Johnathan Pryce has grown on me. He does drop his accent at times and sounds downright western. anyway, this recoding deserves 5 stars!
Free Music Review: The best! Hit: 5 Stars
This is the best among our contemporary mega-musicals. And a major part of its success is, of course, the stamp of Lea Salonga on it (whose strong vocals and performance, especially on stage, is tantamount to perfection as Kim). As the previous reviewer has noted, none of the other actors, the Kim-wannabes, even comes close. Not even (and not especially) Joanna Ampil in the Studio Cast Complete Recording, who messes up the whole production with her straight-from-speech-class "singing". (In fact, her best parts in the recording are those in which she doesn't sound like herself, but sounds rather Lea-ish.) Those who've seen Miss Saigon numerous times with Kims played by Lea Salonga and the different wannabes know why there is no one else in the world who's perfect for the role.
Free Music Review: Miss Saigon will bring tears to your eyes Hit: 5 Stars
This is an absolutely wonderful cd, and although I have never seen the musical, I must say I am a fan. After Les Miserables, discovering Miss Saigon made me give only more respect to Boubill and Schonberg, they make wonderful music that I think could reach anyone willing to understand a story. Lea Salonga is perfect as usual, she is a little more in place with her role as Kim rather than as Eponine (I thought her performance in the 10th anniversary was not as good as the original broadway recording..but that's just me.). Overral an awesome cd, not as perfect and flawless as les miserables, but just as intricate and well done. The story of Miss Saigon is a terribly sad one, but I think it is the kind of story that will bring people closer together and take a look within. Bravo.
