Free Music Notes for Miss Saigon (Original 1989 London Cast)Free Music Review: Outstanding! Hit: 5 Stars
I've seen the original London, original Broadway, and the many other incarnations of this powerful musical. As far as Kims go, no one comes close to Lea Salonga, not even Joanna Ampil whose voice quality is nowhere close to Lea Salonga's in any of the songs. The differences are more pronounced when one sees the live performances of the two actresses, in which Lea Salonga easily eclipses Joanna Ampil on presence and vocal power alone).
This recording was made right after Miss Saigon's opening in London so it's relatively raw (compared to actual performances), but the quality of singing and performances is way above that of the complete version.

I listen to this CD whenever I can. This is an amazing musical, and the CD brings back all the memories of watching it.This cast is extremely talented. Lea Salonga's voice presents Kim as she should be presented: innocent, scared, and passionate. One thing that confuses me, however: On the CD, Ellen's solo is called, "Now That I've Seen Her", but on the CD, it's sung with the updated lyrics, "It's her or me." Some of the lyrics in the booklet do not pair up with the CD as well. But it doesn't matter. I suggest you get this CD. It will make you cry. Especially, "The Fall of Saigon." That song pulls at my heart.
Free Music Review: Best recording of this powerful musical! Hit: 5 Stars
While it's definitely worthwhile to get the complete version (the 1995 Studio Cast Recording), THIS is the version to get if your funds allow you to buy only one recording. All the major actors, from Lea Salonga down to Peter Polycarpou, are superior both in interpretation and vocal quality. Joanna Ampil in the Studio Recording is strong, but (as many others have noted) her deliberately used 'speech 101' accent -- which is neither British nor American (not even Filipino or Australian), is distracting. So, too, is Hinton Battle's articulation problems (particularly annoying in "Bui Doi") and his R&B rendition of a marching song!

I bought this CD for two reasons: 1. it's written by the same people who wrote Les Miserables (my favorite musical) and 2. Lea Salonga sings the lead. I am so glad that I bought it. The performances all around are awesome but especially Lea's. Her innocent yet powerful voice fits perfectly with the character of Kim. The other performers are very good and the score also conveys the sadness of the story. While on that subject, let me say that this is NOT a happy story so don't listen to it expecting to be uplifted. But definitely get this recording. I haven't seen it on stage but I plan to as soon as possible whenever that may be.
Free Music Review: AWESOME JOB BY LONDON CAST ! Hit: 5 Stars
This c.d. sends chills down my spine every time I listen to it ! For all who have seen the production of "Miss Saigon" you know how moving all of the pieces are, and it is hard to put that kind of music down on a recording to keep the feeling, but somehow this London cast pulls it off ! I felt like I was back at the theatre watching the play all over again. The part of Kim, sung by Lea Salonga, does an excellent job. Her version of "I'd Give My Life for You" is absolutely awesome ! I don't know if I could hear a better one... This is definitely a five star c.d. if not more. BUY IT NOW !!! END
