Free Music Review: Thank Heavens For Alan Jackson

There is so much stuff that isn't worth noting in today's country music. Sadly, a lot of that is what's popular and ruling the charts. We should be so glad that Alan Jackson is still here making the best music of it's kind. I like country music, but only get into a select few. Alan is #1 on that list. He always keeps it real. He's traditional modern, if that makes any sense. After experimenting a little lately with the gospel album "Precious Memories", and the more adult, romantic, bluesy "Like Red On A Rose"(which I ended up finding rater brilliant after a few listens. First listen was strange since it was a different sound from him). Alan pretty much gets back to basics with this release, making it a CD that goes back to his roots and does what he does best. Make great country music.
The album starts off with the title track, "Good Time", and you instantly know that you are not just in for a good time, but you are in for some classic Alan. The title track is a classic, fun Alan toe tapper, and it's a smashing way to start the CD off. Fun, energetic, and fun to sing along too. It leads right into the first single, "Small Town Southern Man", which is a classic country/Alan tune. It goes thru the life of a simple man, his family, and love. It's a great song. And with 17 tracks and a run time of 71 minutes, the album is filled with one great song after the other. "Sissy's Song" is a gorgeous ballad. I don't know what significance it has(if any), but it is one of the stand out tracks here on the CD. Elsewhere, Alan grasps the concept of new technology and the way things are now with the witty "I Still Like Bologna", and reminisces about a time in his life when things were changing with "1976", another Alan song that sounds like it should be on the radio.
The album also includes a great, up-tempo duet with Martina McBride called "Never Loved Before". Alan rarely does duets on his studio albums, so this was a nice surprise and a wonderful collaboration. He also has a "It's Five 'O' Clock Somewhere" type feel to the song "Laid Back 'N Low Key", another catchy toe tapper. "If Jesus Walked The World Today" closes out the album on a high note. A fun, catchy mid to upper tempo tune. Really, there isn't a bad track on the album. It's Alan, how could there be?. This is just the tip of the iceberg. "Long Long Way" is a fun, catchy track as well.
In the end, "Good Time" is another stellar release from a country artist who is loved and respected and successful after 18 years for a reason. He sticks to his guns and releases nothing but great material after great material. Great CD after great CD. He never disappoints. Some might think 71 minutes is too long, and 17 songs a few too many, but there shouldn't be any complaints when the material is this good. In my opinion, I think this is one of the top best works Mr. Jackson has done. All I can say to end this review is - keep 'em coming!.
