Free Music Notes for Little Shop Of Horrors (1986 Film)Free Music Review: Fun CD Hit: 4 Stars
I really enjoyed the music from the movie and the people who sang the songs. I looked for the sound track, and chose this CD. Steve Martin's "Dentist" is worth the price.
Free Music Review: Great for singing in the car Hit: 4 Stars
Loved the movie, love the soundtrack. Great for singing in the car when you are in a traffic jam.
Free Music Review: Doesn't compare Hit: 3 Stars
Next to the other Little Shop recordings out there, this one just doesn't measure up. Some of the tracks are pretty good (even when compared to the Broadway recordings), whereas others are just so-so.
Rick Moranis and Steven Martin do a pretty decent job in their roles. One of the biggest weaknesses here is the two Audreys. I don't like Ellen Greene at all -- she plays Audrey a little *too* ditzy, to the point of being annoying -- and Levi Stubbs just doesn't have the deep, rich voice that the Audrey II really needs.
On the plus side for this recording: you get songs that were cut from the botched ending of the movie, namely "The Meek Shall Inherit" and "Don't Feed the Plants". You also get a song that isn't on any of the other recordings: "Mean Green Mother From Outer Space". Unfortunately, because of references to Frankenstein and King Kong, this otherwise pretty decent song moves to cheeseville.
Also a plus, you don't get that lame "Suddenly, Seymour" reprise that felt (and in fact was) tacked onto the end of the movie.
On the minus side, you don't get that lame "Suddenly, Seymour" reprise, which means that this isn't quite an accurate reflection of the movie's soundtrack. The song "Suppertime II", where the Audrey II is singing to Audrey, was also inexplicably left out.
Although one might be able to make the case that movie pacing requires the shortening of the original stage versions of the songs, there's quite a bit of truncation here that leaves a kind of cheap feeling to this recording if you're accustomed to hearing the longer original versions.
The orchestrations are pretty good, although some of them take some getting used to before you can appreciate them (e.g., The Meek Shall Inherit).
In the end, I can only recommend this recording to people who have to own every possible recording of Little Shop. My personal recommendation for the "one Little Shop recording" listener is the New Broadway Cast Recording.
Free Music Review: Disappointing Hit: 3 Stars
This isn't really the film soundtrack at all. Best I can tell it's a studio recording using most of the movie cast. Not only are some tracks vastly different than the film versions, there are tracks here not even included in the final film. That might sound good at first but because of these tracks, things like the Supper Time reprise are missing. Also, the sound quality is awful. There are times when you can barely hear certain singer (especially in The Meek Shall Inherit). Before you buy this CD, know that it's incomplete, poorly recorded, and different from the film. It does have the movie cast though, so if that's what you're after then this is the CD for you.
Free Music Review: Broadway version is better! Hit: 3 Stars
This is the '80s movie soundtrack. Rick Morannis is a very believable dorky Seymore, but lacks vocal talent. Ellen Green is very cute at sometimes, but when she belts, oh gosh cover your ears. You can tell that her voice isn't really like that fake accent and she tries a little too hard not to break out of it. Audrey 2 is a really good bass and I really like him. If you are looking for a good recording of Little Shop of Horrors (if you are like auditioning for a community theatre version, etc) buy the broadway version! But if you are a fan of the movie, this is for you.
