Free Music Review: My first introduction to The Alan Parsons Project

I was 15 when I happened to run into a friend working in a retail store. He was alone, and playing some music on cassette tape. It was "I, Robot" and I'd been listening to the title track. I was hooked. The next day I went out and bought the vinyl record. That was over thirty years ago, and I still have the album. If you've never heard of The Alan Parsons Project, this is as good as any to start with.
Originally, this album put the Project in the charts because of Star Wars -- people fell in love with robots and wanted robot-oriented products, and this album was all about them, exploring them musically from various social and cultural perspectives.
Listening to the remastered songs on this digital remastered version has been a treat. To my mind, it is one of the strongest albums Alan Parsons and Eric Woolfson have done. The theme of being different, and struggling with discrimination runs deep through the songs. The albums always have one or two really good instrumental pieces, but the lyrics hit home, too. Recently, the scifi TV phenomenon Battlestar Galactica has been a great hit. Recently, watching an episode, the song "Breakdown" started playing in my head: "Freedom, freedom, we will not obey" -- the robots rebelling against their masters as they acquire sentience. Good stuff. If you haven't heard both the earlier release and the remastered version, I recommend you get both. But if you're on a budget, get the remastered version: it has the early drafts (for those who like hearing how the song has evolved to final draft: 4 of them), and the so-called "naked" song -- The Naked Robot: a compilation of the album's music themes in one long song; a nice addition to the original ten tracks. The album is a classic in the progressive rock genre.
