Free Music Notes for I Robot

Free Music Review: A Superb reissue of a SERIOUS Prog-Rock Classic!
Hit: 5 Stars

Back in the 70s (the real GOLDEN ERA OF POP/ROCK Music), this album was almost immediately linked with Pink Floyd's "Dark Side Of The Moon". The reason is simple: Alan Parsons was the recording engineer of such marvelous music work. He also worked with Paul McCartney on "Wings Wild Life" as he did with Al Stewart on "Year Of The Cat", as well as in the earliest Ambrosia albums (most of the Ambrosia musicians were also the first members of The Alan Parsons Project).

I ROBOT is full of energetic, intelligent and superbly performed Prog Rock.
Having the chance of getting a remastered version for less than twelve Bucks (plus the bonus tracks), is a good chance to re-discover how well conceived, marketed (the Hipgnosis cover works were really superb!) and performed, British Rock music used to be during the 70s and early 80s.

A Must-Have for any serious Prog-Rock fan for sure!

Free Music Review: Great stuff
Hit: 5 Stars

It's been a long time since I heard this album (now a CD). It was great to hear it again. It sounds wonderful. Terrific mastering. What else would you expect of Alan Parsons. The extra bonus tracks are quite interesting as well.

Its on my iPod and is a regular go to for some laid back listening.

Free Music Review: My first introduction to The Alan Parsons Project
Hit: 5 Stars

I was 15 when I happened to run into a friend working in a retail store. He was alone, and playing some music on cassette tape. It was "I, Robot" and I'd been listening to the title track. I was hooked. The next day I went out and bought the vinyl record. That was over thirty years ago, and I still have the album. If you've never heard of The Alan Parsons Project, this is as good as any to start with.
Originally, this album put the Project in the charts because of Star Wars -- people fell in love with robots and wanted robot-oriented products, and this album was all about them, exploring them musically from various social and cultural perspectives.
Listening to the remastered songs on this digital remastered version has been a treat. To my mind, it is one of the strongest albums Alan Parsons and Eric Woolfson have done. The theme of being different, and struggling with discrimination runs deep through the songs. The albums always have one or two really good instrumental pieces, but the lyrics hit home, too. Recently, the scifi TV phenomenon Battlestar Galactica has been a great hit. Recently, watching an episode, the song "Breakdown" started playing in my head: "Freedom, freedom, we will not obey" -- the robots rebelling against their masters as they acquire sentience. Good stuff. If you haven't heard both the earlier release and the remastered version, I recommend you get both. But if you're on a budget, get the remastered version: it has the early drafts (for those who like hearing how the song has evolved to final draft: 4 of them), and the so-called "naked" song -- The Naked Robot: a compilation of the album's music themes in one long song; a nice addition to the original ten tracks. The album is a classic in the progressive rock genre.

Free Music Review: Innovative
Hit: 5 Stars

Put on your headphones and enjoy. I found this to be very original crossing the barrier of electronica and rock music. Most creative. This concept album rounds out my collection of syphonic rock music.

Free Music Review: Progressive ROCK by The Alan Parsons Project
Hit: 5 Stars

"I Robot" was the 2nd album released by the Alan Parson Project (APP). It came out in 1977, on the heels of "Tales of Mystery and Imagination: Edgar Allen Poe". "I Robot" is based only loosely on the the general concept of Asimov's "I, Robot" (as another reviewer has ably commented).

This album is widely touted as being the epitome and, perhaps, the apex of APP's accomplishments in terms of a classic rock concept album. If you listened to APP's 1st album (Tales of Mystery...) and you liked tracks such as "The Tell-Tale Heart" and "Dr. Tarr and Professor Fether" then are almost certainly going to LOVE this album.

In some ways this is a harder-driving album than most of the APP efforts, since it has tracks like "I Wouldn't Want To Be Like You", "Breakdown", and "The Voice."

If, on the other hand, the tracks you enjoyed most from "Tales of Mystery..." were the more reflective ones, such as "To One in Paradise", don't despair, there is something here for you, too. Check out "Some Other Time", "Don't Let It Show", and "Day After Day."

Finally, if you found yourself going back to the instrumental tracks on "Tales of Mystery..." then you will almost certainly enjoy "I Robot", "Total Eclipse", and "Genesis 1:32".

The Album has great staying power. As other reviewers have noted, even if they first came across this album years ago, it remains an active part of their listing experiences. It has for me, too. I bought the album (LP, actually) in 1977 when it came out, so I've listened to this album for over 30 years. It's not getting old.

Finally, one additional bit of info on this particular disc. The original release of "I Robot" had 10 tracks. This one has 15. The value added tracks include background and early experimental or rough tracks for some of the other songs on the CD. If you are a serious APP fan, you may find yourself being tempted by those tracks alone!

All in all, this is, easily a 5-star product. And, I don't just run around giving everything 5 stars! You and I know that there are lots and lots of non-5 star options out there.

Anyway, if you are a long-time APP fan, there is something for you. If you are just discovering APP, I recommend that you do it right, and listen to the APP albums in order, starting with "Tales of Mystery and Imagination" before you move on to this one. Either way, though, you are in for a treat!

Definitely 5 stars from a 30+ year APP listener...
