Free Music Notes for The Mummy Returns: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

Free Music Review: Great follow-up of Goldsmith!
Hit: 5 Stars

When I first heard that Goldsmith would not score the sequel film, and beeing replaced by the jerky comedy composer Alan Silvestri,I was worried. Goldsmith wrote a superb score for the first film, with an unforgettable egyptian sounding theme. But when I heard this CD,I was shocked by the variation and bombastic action cues!Over 70 minutes of music is featured here. Although I heard it after hearing this one, this CD shows great similarities to John Debney`s 1996 hit Cutthroat Island, which was actually used in the trailers for the film, and already then,it fitted very well. Silvestri`s real score is sounding pretty much the same. The Cutthroat Island love theme even makes a short appearance somewhere,I can`t remember where. All of Goldsmith's old themes are lost, but instead,Silvestri introduces a new main theme which is not as agressive and dark as Goldsmith`s original. It would make a perfect love theme as well as adventure music, and it can be heard at it`s best in the track Medjai Commanders, which is probably the only slow track of this soundtrack. The ethnic moments are very few,but there is no doubt that Silvestri is a really talented action composer - his themes are in fact as adventurous as John Williams`s Indiana Jones.
The first track,Legend of the Scorpion King,is a massive opening cue for the film as the tale of the new villain is told. It begins with two minutes of non-stop action music, with a huge brass motif and some chorus in the great battle scenes in an ancient egypt. Then,it becomes almost sad as The Scorpion King is left alone, but he is saved by Allah when eating a scorpion, and then the track quickly becomes action-filled again. Scorpion Shoes and Imhotep Unearthed are two other great tracks, that is only partely action-filled. The next great theme comes in "Evy Kidnapped",that begins rather slow, but suddenly bursts out into full orchestra and introduces the second main theme, only heard the action moments. It is by far the best action theme ever written for a soundtrack - heroic, bombastic, and intensive. A great repeatition of that theme can be heard in "My First Bus Ride",which is also a highlight - it goes on for 8 minutes and the action music never stops!"A Gift and A Curse" is a slow track when Alex is kidnapped by Imhotep. "Evy Remembers" is another great action cue, when Evelyn remembers her past life as an egyptian princess fighting Imhotep`s lover.
It has a full choral motif, but I do not know what that theme is. "We`re in Trouble" has some real beauty as the discovers Am Sheres hidden oasis, when the main theme is played with a full orchestra and chorus, like Jurassic Park.
Pygmy Attack is introducing a motif that is quite similar to the raptor theme of The Lost World, but better than that. "The Mummy Returns" marks the end of a great action adventure, featuring all of the main themes in an eight-minute suite.
It is followed by the end credits song "Forever May Not Be Long Enough",which is a heavy metal song performed by Live. It is actually quite good,as I like hard rock, but I don't know what it really has to do with the film - it seems like they placed it there just for fun.
Over all, this is one of this year`s greatest musical adventures. Silvestri wrote roughly 117 minutes of music for the film, although 70 of these appeared on the album. A double-disc release with the missed 40 minutes (mostly from the final battle with the Scorpion King) would have been nice, but it doesn`t have to be expanded - it is good as it is. But I do not think it can get an Academy Award,as it has too few ethnic moments. But as an action score,it is unlikely it will ever be surpassed by any soundtrack this year, possibly in the next, when John Debney makes the soundtrack for "The Scorpion King". Then,we can perhaps expect a combination between this and Cutthroat Island,as it is the composer of the latter one. But this is a great work by Silvestri, and I hope he will score more action films in the future,as he has the talent of doing that.

The Mummy Returns: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack Poster

Having begun life as a modest 1932 horror vehicle for the great Boris Karloff, the Mummy franchise went on to encompass a whole cycle of classic Universal fright flicks and, most recently, a big-budget, if equally popcorn-friendly, reincarnation laden with computer-generated effects. What with the success of Gladiator, The Mummy Returns also expanded its scope to include the Rock's Scorpion King and his legions, giving the saga a distinct sword 'n' sandal epic sweep in the bargain. Alan Silvestri's music echoes those concerns in a score that's one part galloping '40s throwback, with a dash of Stravinsky-lite, and heavy on the Zimmeresque Sturm und Drang. It's a far cry from Silvestri's mostly comedic canon, and a radical departure from The Mexican, its breezy, tongue-in-cheek predecessor. And if the sheer scale of the score's blazing brass, thundering tympani, crashing cymbals, and soaring choirs effectively disguise its paucity of memorable melodies and substance, they perfectly echo the thrill-ride intentions of the film itself. Live and über-producer Glen Ballard also contribute the obligatory pop end-title song, "Forever May Not Be Long Enough," a darkly urgent little ditty with suitably exotic production flourishes. --Jerry McCulley
