Free Music Notes for Flavors Of Entanglement

Free Music Review: 'Flavors' and then Some
Hit: 5 Stars

I have loved Alanis's music, lyrics and sound since Jagged Little Pill. I own all of her CD's and I would have to say this is up there as one of my favorites. Her knack for lyrics and thought provoking songs has always grabbed my attention and her latest effort does not disappoint.

On 'Flavors' Alanis writes straight from the heart and paints such a picture that you feel almost as if you lived it with her. It kicks off with a guitar heavy "Citizen Of The Planet" which is one of my favorite songs on this CD. She takes her listeners on a journey through the few rock infused tracks to her slower heartfelt songs.

Standout tracks:

"Citizen Of The Planet"
"Straitjacket" (one of my favorites on here)
"Versions Of Violence"
"Not As We" (a slower and beautiful song)
"Torch" (talking about letting someone go and laying your torch for them down)
"Incomplete"

The few extra dollars is money worth spent on the deluxe version. The second CD includes an extra "big" booklet plus 5 extra songs; songs that are an added dose of brilliance. "The Guy Who Leaves" is my favorite on the second CD; great lyrics and very emotional. If you're going to purchase the new Alanis CD; pay the extra few bucks and go with this version!

Every song on both discs are brilliant and worth listening to. There is not one single song that I skip over. Any alanis fan will be pleased as well as anyone who likes the singer/songwriter artists'. A must have!!

Free Music Review: Best Break Up album since Pele....
Hit: 5 Stars

Not to be misleading, because this is so much more than a break up album, but this has to be the best 'break up' album since Tori Amos's Boys for Pele. Unlike Tori's album, Alanis's "Flavors of Entanglement" is straightforward and accessible. Accessible I would think for anyone who has gone through the stages of grief. Alanis does this beautifully here. Alanis is known for her personal lyrics, and they shine through on each track on this album. "Not as We", "Orchid" and "Torch" are tearjerking ballads. "Underneath" is a great pop-feeling song but as a debut single it only hints at the great things to be found on this album. "Straightjacket" and "Versions of Violence", and "Madness" (although slower), are great 'angry' songs. "Incomplete" is sort of melancholy, sad with hope. "Giggling Again for No Reason" and "Vulnerable Man" are uplifting and catchy. I find myself singing along with them every time. And "On The Tequilla" should have been on the main album in my opininon. I could see this being a great party song. It is silly and fun enough to do so. I am a major Alanis fan, she is one of my favorites. I love the majority of her music, and at least like the remainder, but even at those standards, "Flavors Of Entanglement" soars above the rest. This may be her best work yet.

Top five tracks: "Not As We", "Torch", "Orchid", "Bring on the Tequilla" and "Straightjacket".

Free Music Review: Flavor Overload
Hit: 5 Stars

By far one of the best albums I've bought in a long times, Flavors is Alanis at her best. She presents herself as vulnerable, playful and even with quite low self-esteem. One thing that bothers me, is that all the people saying that this album isn't personal, aren't listening to the song "Tapes" which has Alanis feeding messages to herself like that she's unloveable. "Citizen of the Planet" starts out quite mysteriously, with an almost middle-eastern flare. It turns into a vocal powerhouse.

This album really surprised me. To be honest, I didn't think Alanis had that good of a voice. She's proved me wrong. "Straitjacket" is another fave, and Alanis is quite angry. There really isn't one song on the album that is bad. Seriously. That is how good this cd is. The beautiful "Orchid" makes the bonus track version the only one you can buy. Don't even think of buying the sub-par standard version.

Alanis tests new waters on this CD. This is quite a departure from Jagged Little Pill. It's hard to pick a fave song on this album. It's between "Orchid" and "Not as We."

There is one point of contention I must make, where I disagree with Alanis. In "Citizen of the Planet" she says that her prisons are used for rehabilitation. I beg to differ. Prisons are meant to punish. Case-in-point: you can't rehabilitate a child molester.

Free Music Review: One of the best albums of 2008
Hit: 5 Stars

It's been 13 years since "Jagged Little Pill" owned the Billboard charts, but this CD explains why Alanis still has a large, dedicated fan base. She still remains one of the most important singer/songwriters in the music business.

The first single off of "Flavors" is "Underneath," an upbeat song that compares personal relationships to large-scale wars. Though it may not be the best song on the album, it highlights Guy Sigsworth's production. The verses also sell the song.

Other highlights are "Not As We," a heartbreaking piano-based ballad. "For now I'm faking it, til I'm pseduo making it, From scratch begin again, but this time I as I, and not as we." This song is lyrically one of the strongest songs on the album, and the simple piano arrangment suits it well.

"Incomplete" is one of the strongest songs on the album. The upbeat, techno-influenced track is about her hopes that she will someday be happy and fulfilled.

As far as the bonus tracks, "Madness" is the best. It's another sad, piano song, though it's not as big of a standout as "Not as We," which explains why it is a Bside. The other bonus tracks are hit-and-miss, but this track is a must listen.

This album was worth the four year wait. Alanis may not put albums out often, but when she does, it is certainly a big event.

Free Music Review: Spiritual and Powerful
Hit: 5 Stars

I used to not listen to Alanis as she appeared so often to be "angry" in certain songs and the way she was promoted.

But then I began to listen to a few spiritual things she had to say.

This album for me is her best yet - with a caveat.

The "Deluxe" version is THE version to get - period. I cannot imagine a version of this album without the truly important "Limbo No More" and a few other cuts found only on the second CD of the deluxe edition.

If you like Alanis when she is powerful, less angry, or flat out spiritual, this is the album from her for which you have been waiting.

I have listened solely to this album for weeks on end now, as part of my workout. It so converted me that I bought tickets to her concert many months away. I only do that these days with those who truly move me and make my life better.

If you dare to look at yourself and ponder rather than blame; if you are open to great music that cajoles your spiritual side, GET THIS.

In my view, this is her best album yet - but get the Deluxe version or miss out on some other important (and one just plain Tom Tom Club silly fun type) tunes.

By the way, I'm sober and I have no issue with "Bring On The Tequila" as a very cute, poppy chorus that's hard to beat.
