Free Music Notes for Flavors Of EntanglementFree Music Review: Best come back album of the year Hit: 5 StarsWith all of the artists from bygone days that have been releasing new material this year (Cyndi Lauper, Donna Summer, B-52's, REM - the list goes on), this newest album from Alanis Morissette has got to be the best release of them all.
Not since "Jagged Little Pill" have I been so enthralled by Alanis' music. "Flavors of Entanglement" is absolutely fantastic. The angst is still there, but more tempered, with several gorgeous ballads to even it all out.
If you purchase this album - by all means, get the Bonus Tracks edition. The 5 extra songs on it are well worth the extra $1 it costs, and quite frankly are some of the best work on this newest album from Morissette.
I can honestly say that I love every song on this album, but by far "In Praise of the Vulnerable Man" has got to be my favorite - it's simply beautiful.
"Citizen of the Planet", "Straightjacket", "Versions of Violence", and "Moratorium" all harken back to that angst that so defined "Jagged Little Pill", yet all of these songs are so new and different you won't be dissappointed at all or get caught up in thinking that Alanis is just relying on that successful formula.
"Underneath" really sounds like it came off the "Jagged Little Pill" album, so much so that it could easily slide right in (or Underneath so to speak) the songs off that album. But, it's a song that really shines on its own, and helps tie Alanis' current music to her unique style that she made so famous with her previous work.
"Not as We" just punches you right in the heart. It's such an emotional song with lyrics that ring so true for anyone that has been through a breakup.
"Orchid" is one of the most beautiful songs on the Bonus Tracks edition. Alanis can really sing a ballad with beauty and grace, which some may find hard to believe. She has a few of them on her newest album, including "Torch", another heart wrenching song, "Tapes", "Madness", and "Limbo No More". They are all stunning songs full of emotion and heartfelt sentiments.
"Giggling Again for No Reason", "Incomplete", "The Guy Who Leaves", and "On the Tequila" are all very unique and seem to step away just a bit for Alanis' extremely unique and recognizable style. They are all welcome changes for this fact and once again, not a bad song in the bunch.
Honestly, there is not a single song on this album that I don't like. Alanis has done a really good job of putting together a new album that is overflowing with many flavors - all quite deserving of a listen (or taste), over and over again.
I am overjoyed that she has put together such a wonderful collection of new songs. I was having to rely on listening to my "Jagged Little Pill" album over, and over again to get my Morissette fix every once in a while, since I am not really fond of any of her work since that album. Now, with "Flavors of Entanglement", I am set for a long time to come, as I'm sure this latest album of hers will provide me with many years of listening pleasure.
Free Music Review: Disregard the 'naysayers' Hit: 4 StarsThis is about the fourth time I've listened to this CD and I keep waiting for it to sour on me. Instead I keep wanting to come back to it more and more. I read the negative reviews prior to buying this CD and I've got to tell you I'm not seeing their negativity. Ya there's electronica/pop/emo leanings here but the music & lyrics are still great. I'm partial to 'Under Rug Swept' & 'Jagged Little Pill', I also enjoyed 'So Called Chaos'. If you feel the same way...do yourself a favor and seek this cd out you won't regret it.
Free Music Review: Simplicity Of Knots Hit: 5 Stars"Citizen Of The Planet": The angst of life on this ever evolving earth. The instrumentation cradles her voice and the riffs are just under her tone.
"Underneath": This is classic Alanis, albeit with a twist. The twist is tasty and will make the very hairs on your body rise. The music is almost negated in the listener's mind with her voice so carefully placed within this track.
"Straightjacket": The perfect anthem for anyone with a co-dependency. I find this track most personal, perhaps you will too. Musically, this track is perfect and the programming grinds away like a lullaby.
"Versions Of Violence": The orchestrations on this track deserve a listen, this track is a rollercoaster of musical and emotional whims. Never judge a song by it's title.
"Not As We": A piano gift wrapped in the beauty that is her voice. Love.
"In Praise Of The Vulnerable Man": Perhaps a slight, every so slight, country riff. This song is a lyrical triumph as her voice etches the lyrics out in such a way that will delight even the hardest critic.
"Moratorium": A declaration, softly, of true independence. A perfect track, haunting yet overtly pleasant on all levels.
"Torch": A crooning track, my least favorite, although the lyrics bring this track to a five star.
"Giggling Again For No Reason": A pop treat with a sugar so sweet you'll almost gag with the delight of a bulimic. The programming is perfection here.
"Tapes": A metaphor, not in song. Autophrenia, perhaps.
"Incomplete": A swaying to and fro, perfect composition within the jewel that is this song.
"Orchid": Oversampling at it's finest. Her voice has never been more angelic. An orchid by any other name....
"The Guy Who Leaves": Great rock song with her lyrics of anger at a set point. This song boils away without leaving any salt behind in the pot.
"Madness": Her vocal is focal here, it works so perfectly. Don't blame anyone, not even yourself. Thank U for all you've given me in the world of negativity.
"Limbo No More": A balladesque track with sweeping vocals and trinklings of stars.
"On The Tequila": A fun song. The programming is wonderful. Lyrically, not that great.
Free Music Review: Her best album since JLP Hit: 5 StarsI have enjoyed all of Alanis' albums, even while the world turned their back on her. Yes, they weren't all solid, even, and tremendous on first listening as Jagged Little Pill was, but they all grew on me to a point where I really enjoyed them. This new album is Alanis grown up, with a new sound mixed in with the old. I can't stop listening to it, I haven't changed my playlist in a week. Thank you Alanis for making a record I have to listen to over and over because I keep hearing new things and I am singing them in my head during the day!
If you are a mature listener (over 30?) who enjoyed Jagged Little Pill, I can not imagine you not loving this after a few listens. I downloaded this instead of getting the CD in the mail. Instant gratification! Wonderful! Brilliant grown-up pop!
Free Music Review: The standard for all EMO girls returns Hit: 4 StarsSomeone once said all the "it girl" singers live in fear that Alanis Morrissette will walk into the room. That still rings true. A beautiful voice, dynamic, yet subtle singing. Grab you by the throat lyrics. Alanis remains a cut above. She's been away too long. Check out "Madness" if you doubt her skill set. Thank you Alanis. Ryan's a fool!
