Free Music Review: A Timeless Journey of the Soul
Hit: 5 Stars

Ten years ago, as 1996 was coming to a close, Alanis Morissette's Jagged Little Pill had become the best-selling album of the year, spending 10 of the 12 months of 1996 in Billboard's Top 5 with 10 weeks spent at #1(not to mention first going to #1 in October of 1995 as the album started it's massive selling streak in July of that year)and having created what became the quintessential soundtrack to life. I think the primary reason Jagged Little Pill drew such a large appeal was because every human emotion was explored on the album. Sure, Morissette shows her anger in the now-classic anthem, "You Oughta Know," in which she belts a penetrating attack on the man who dumped her for another woman. But the album's second single, "Hand in my Pocket," showed a softer Alanis in tune with a cosmic vibe as she sang, "What it all comes down to my friends, is that everything is just fine, fine, fine." Morissette's openness to be herself became us ten and eleven years ago, and still applies even to this day. Listeners understood both the fears and inspirations and the need to seek peace and comfort in the opening track, "All I Really Want," the acceptance of difficulties in life from "You Learn," the bitterness in "Right Through You," the questioning of religion in "Forgiven," the strive to be impressive in "Perfect," the bliss of falling in love with "Head Over Feet," the logic of consequential outcomes in "Ironic," the freedom from not being the enabler in "Not the Doctor," and so on and so forth. Morissette and producer Glen Ballard gave the world a timeless gem as they made music history. Looking ahead to five years from now, and then ten, fifteen, twenty, Jagged Little Pill will always make first timers feel cathartic again, while inspiring new generations to rebel as they wallow in self-analysis.

Free Music Review: Oh The Depth Of It All
Hit: 1 Stars

Until a listen of this cd I never truly understood anguish, pain, and authenticity. Morrisette is an artist of the highest caliber. Reaching inside the depths of her soul to produce music that allows mere mortals a glimpse into the heart of genius. Thank you Alanis for having the courage to put the struggles of growing up in suburban Ottawa as a provincial Tiffany child star into this masterpiece. The realism of those mean streets that you survived only serve to make your art more credible. Even the name Jagged Little Pill (and Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie too) is charged with an energy that is free from all posturing and posing. The best that music has to offer. NOT!!!!!!!!

Free Music Review: Rock music's queen of hurt
Hit: 4 Stars

Radio-friendly rock music had a new queen once Alanis Morissette stepped into the picture here. Her oft-excruciatingly personal lyrics and blazingly unique singing scored her numerous radio smashes and with her first official rock record Jagged Little Pill the Grammy-winning singer-songwriter delivers one of the best albums in music history. From its first international No. 1 smash "You Oughta Know," album Jagged Little Pill's presence became known on the charts with numerous other hit singles like "All I Really Want," "Hand In My Pocket," "You Learn," "Head Over Feet" and "Ironic." Morissette has a slight misstep here with the cooing sometimes-good-sometimes-just-so-off ballad "Perfect" and "Mary Jane," Pill's most unmemorable moments--but in the end this genuine songstress produces original and unbelievably unique rock music with real hurt and heart.

Free Music Review: Something everyone needs to swallow
Hit: 5 Stars

What more can be said about Canada-born singer-songwriter Alanis Morissette? She has proven herself over and over as being one of music's leaders with her overly personal lyrics and radio-friendly beats. Jagged Little Pill is as perfect as a commercial rock record can get. It's not only hardcore and controversial, it's more importantly marketable. Every song here is a brilliant piece of art (speaking in terms of rock music, that is--like most music, it may not be everybody's choice), but more interesting is how Morissette sings it--the pain, anger and hurt come off in a wrenchingly shrill, nasally and sometimes annoyingly unique sound that's all her own. Blisteringly personal and full of angst, Jagged Little Pill is definitely something everyone should swallow.

Free Music Review: Dynamic, chance taking album! LOUD!
Hit: 4 Stars

I still have the cassette of this album (which I've had since 1995) and I plan on getting the CD soon. I bought her best of album last November. Alanis Morissette made a dynamic album that fully defines grunge and alternative rock's 6-year dominance in the 90s. Everything all clicks on here! I still like to scream when singing the chorus of You Oughta Know! And still like to turn it up every time! She's not taking no mess when she chews her man up for cheating on her in that song! This song just came out of nowhere in 1995 just as people were still playing their 1994 Hootie and the Blowfish albums way too much. A lot of this album has to be personal, especially You Learn, Hand In My Pocket, Wake Up, Forgiven, Ironic and many others. This album is strong in its rock sound, its lead guitars and full wall of sound on every cut! You Oughta even has shades of hip-hop's beats in its rock sound. I was so pleased that it won Album of the Year at the Grammys (and I didn't even watch that show!) because it broke the mold of the same kind of safe pop album that those voters like to choose (soft and sappy Diane Warren-like pop ballads and so forth). This was the LOUD album that the Grammys finally chose long after Michael Jackson's hugely succesful Thriller from the '80s! Alanis has still maintained a strong fan base and her music still sounds great with her later albums. She does the music SHE wants to do and she is winning at all counts. Jagged Little Pill will always be a favorite and a classic from me!
