Free Music Review: Despite the low temperatures this movie is rife with warmth

There was huge hype surrounding this movie when it hit the theatres and became one of the surprise hits of the year. A documentary about penguins? I couldn't believe that America loved it enough to make it one of the all-time most profitable documentaries. Then I heard that the religious right had swept it under their arms and declared it to be proof of God-I'm guessing it has to be the one who has a son named Jesus though. Maybe they skipped over the part when narrator Morgan Freeman says that this is a continent that's changed dramatically after millions of years. What it is proof of, is that indeed nature is the most powerful force in the universe. Penguins walking for 70 miles to mate and then protect its young against temperatures and weather conditions that are astounding are a testament to the wonderment of nature. The filmmakers themselves surviving in the Antarctica deserve an Oscar for that alone. Never mind that the film was shot brilliantly and the sound of the Emperor penguins will reside in your soul forever. If this movie doesn't create more passion for people to stop global warming than perhaps our humanity is already lost. Also to note, this movie made me really appreciate my wide screen 56" television and new High Definition DVD player.

The journey of this documentary from the country where it was made, France, to America is almost as circuitous as the one taken by its titular birds on their trip across Antartica. In France, various actors voiced the penguins, giving them anthropomorphic qualities; but this approach didn't test well in the U.S., and it was replaced with a voiceover from Morgan Freeman. In France, the soundtrack to La Marche de L'Empereur (the original title) was done by Émilie Simon and it's a wonder of quirky, poppy electronics--definitely not what you'd expect from an animal doc.Simon's music was scratched for the U.S. version, which gets a rather more generic score by Alex Wurman. Typical of Wurman's low-key approach, the track "The Harshest Place on Earth" is anything but harsh. It's a lullaby predictably punctuated by piano and flute--the go-to instruments when Hollywood composers want to evoke feel-good uplift. There's a lot of drama in March of the Penguins, but little has made it onto this CD. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
