Alexander O'Neal's self-titled debut album was a very strong set of contemporary R&B music. Like his idol Otis Redding, O'Neal handled both slow-tempo romantic ballads and stormin', sizzling-hot uptempo tracks equally well. The plaintive and angst-filled ballads "A Broken Heart Can Mend", "Look At Us Now" and the immortal "If You Were Here Tonight" are undoubtedly this CD's standouts but the mid-tempo groovers "What's Missing?" and "You Were Meant To Be My Lady" foreshadow Alexander's accomplishments on subsequent releases like "Hearsay" and "All True Man".
