Free Music Notes for School's Out

Free Music Review: A great effort from the entire band
Hit: 5 Stars

This was the first ACG album I bought (in fact, one of the first albums I ever bought). The band's appearance on ABC's "In Concert" was still fresh in my mind and a TV commercial for the four-LP set "Superstars of the 70s" featured a bit of "School's Out", so I suppose the marketing hook was firmly set.

As an album, this one rounds out what I consider to be the original group's Holy Trinity. "Love it to Death" got the band's musical muscles flexing, "Killer" took that even further while establishing the menacing stage persona, and "School's Out" puts the icing on the cake with their gritty style of hard rock coupled with Ezrin's polish perfectly balanced.

This was also really their last true effort as a group, with songwriting credits hitting all the members and their individual styles sounding through. Lead guitarist Glen Buxton's contributions appear on this LP more than any of the other albums, in fact. "Gutter Cat" is a great collaboration between him and the always interesting Dennis Dunaway. And it has become rock music legend about Buxton's impact on the title track. So much so that the notation to the song's main riff is chiseled on the man's tombstone.

Dennis Dunaway's other entry is "Luney Tune", continuing his unique approach to songwriting he had laid down with the previous two albums. Mike Bruce's "Blue Turk" chronicles a night with a groupie backed with a tasty jazz-influenced foundation. Drummer Neal Smith brings in "Alma Mater", rounding out the "school" theme with a nostalgic ballad about the old days in Arizona.

Alice's vocal and lyrical approach is at it's best. The bratty machismo of "School's Out", "Gutter Cat" and "Public Animal", the many facets of a psychopath in "Luney Tune", a touch of Morrison in "Turk", and even channeling McCartney in "Alma Mater".

One song which always stood out for me on this set was "My Stars", a sci-fi flavored rocker with Alice's vocals run through the phase shifter. It's the only other song off this album which was played on subsequent tours, and they could really jam on it!

Really the only letdown here (and it's minor) is "Grand Finale", a heavily-produced piece of filler which closes the album out. But it also is a harbinger of things to come on the group's next LP. The big production number, credits going to all members but no musical identity apparent, and lots of studio embellishment.

To me, the big reason "Billion Dollar Babies" was such a hit was because it rode the coattails of "School's Out". This is a great 70's hard rock album with some punk attitude thrown in. This was truly the entire band at the top before Alice began stepping away from the group dynamic.

School's Out Poster

Our 24K + series will bring you classic music in delux packaging with the see through slip cases (ala DCC), using original graphics, all beautifully reproduced. We only use the original master tape which is played back on a specially constructed vintage tube playback deck. Here's where the "plus (+)" comes in: The analog masters are put through our new "Kensei Audio Transformer," which adds true "breath of life" to the music, making our new 24K + Gold CD series the best sounding music you can buy, period!
Alice Cooper used to claim he wrote entire albums worth of lyrics in an afternoon with the TV on. True or not, whatever led to moments of ultraclarity such as "We got no class / And we got no principles / And we got no innocence / We can't even think of a word that rhymes" should be bottled and force-fed to Marilyn Manson. School's Out (1972) is where Cooper's show-biz tendencies first fully flowered--"Gutter Cat Versus the Jets" more than nods to West Side Story and "Grande Finale" sounds like the band was trying to ace Elmer Bernstein out of a gig--but it also rocks hard, and most of the ambition-laden stuff (especially the epic "My Stars") really does work. Nasty and grande as they wanted to be. --Rickey Wright
