Free Music Notes for Nothing Safe
Free Music Review: very underwhelmed

I love music, all types. But I never listen to radio and have to depend on word of mouth and reviews. I've seen some great concerts. No one was happier when hair bands ceased and the Ramones, Pistols, the Clash, Pretenders, Blondie, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam and Nirvana moved rock into another phase. I never heard AIC, ever, but kept hearing alot of buzz and good reviews. It was with much anticipiation I ordered this. Finally I get to hear this praised band. But the music is crap. Sounds like Staley is underwater. What was all the hype about his voice? It's awlful. Some good guitar work. But if you missed AIC, move on. (unless you're on heroin). This stuff is as bleak as it gets. I never felt energy, drive, or passion. I can't get over this terrible singing. It's not clear at all. Give me nasal Neil, or angry Hetfield, whiny Alanis, yoodling O'Riodan, perfect Stubbs, pumping Ice Cube, fun Grohl, heavenly Alicia.
The AIC lovers will rip this review, but I am as openminded to music as it gets, and this stuff reeks.
Nothing Safe Poster
Collection of 'Best' material from the 4cd boxset. This version features bonus enhanced material.Although Alice in Chains singer Layne Staley dropped off the radar following 1995's Alice in Chains, it's amazing how good he sounds on 1998's "Get Born Again," the one new track on this 15-song best-of outing. Sounding like a Dirt-era offering, the band's trademark dirgeful sound and melodic, layered, and haunting vocals shine on this strong Staley-Cantrell composition. And there's other interesting material that makes Nothing Safe a safe bet for fans. A demo of "We Die Young" is faster and more metal than the version on 1990's Facelift, while a live "Rooster," lilting "Got Me Wrong" (from Unplugged) and "What Hell Have I" from the Last Action Hero soundtrack are all eminently listenable. --Katherine Turman
