Free Music Review: An inexpensive collection of AIC's singles

Keep in mind, this is just a sampler of AIC's most memorable songs that you'd hear on the radio, or experience as a video. I got this for less than 10 bucks at a department store, and it's a steal at that price and words can't even begin to describe just how great AIC is. The other single disc "best of" collection is Nothing Safe: Best of the Box, and it costs a little more, and has more songs, but this is meant more for the casual fan (which I was), so this is a nice introduction; though I'm always annoyed with record companies releasing multiple best of's, greatest hits..blah.

As for the songs, they are as follows...

1.) Man in the box = Their first hit, from their debut album "Facelift"

2.) Them Bones = The opening track to their 2nd album "Dirt" which many fans would consider their best album

3.) Rooster = One of the greatest songs ever! Probably my favorite one on this particular cd. A stirring tribute to guitarist Jerry Cantrell's father who fought in the Vietnam War, whose nickname was "rooster." This cut is also from Dirt, and a live version appears on "Nothing Safe" instead of this original studio version.

4.) Angry Chair = Also from Dirt; Opens and closes with Sean Kinney's heavy drum beats. Great creepy bass from Mike Starr (whom would be replaced by Mike Inez by the time AIC came out with thier next album)

5.) Would? = The closing song on Dirt. Great lyrics that stand out in the chorus..."Into the flood again, same ol trip it was back then..so I made a big mistake..try to see it once my way."

6.) No Excuses = From "Jar of Flies," which is more of an EP than a typical full length album, but this is where the new bassist Mike Inez makes his appearance. A soft moving ballad.

7.) I Stay Away = Also from Jar of Flies; another ballad akin to No Excuses, only this song makes good use of strings. These songs from Jar of Flies show AIC's talent when it comes to variety.

8.) Grind = This song definitely has a grinding, crunching, infectious beat. One of the band's heavier songs; right up there with the likes of Angry Chair. This song is taken from AIC's last self-titled album (AKA "Tripod")

9.) Heaven Beside You = Also from Tripod; this one is not on Nothing Safe. Another ballad with a darker underlying tone. Layne's voice also sounds a little different on this one.

10.) Again = Also from Tripod; Rocks hard all the way through.

The meat of AIC's recording career lasted from 1990-95. One of the best grunge bands to come out of Seattle/Washington State like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, etc. However, AIC stands out for its harder sound. In addition to the original recordings; I'll have to recommend AIC's MTV Unplugged concert on dvd.

Also, Columbia is planning the release of yet another AIC best of; greatest hits collection. The Essential Alice in Chains should be released sometime this year, and may be the definitive best of set. But for those that just want a sample of their radio hits, this should fit the bill, but if you like good music (if so, then you'll love AIC), you're going to want even more afterwards.
