Free Music Review: Layne's Goodbye
Hit: 5 Stars

This album was mainly captained by Layne Staley(leadsinger), who wrote most of the lyrics and music unlike most previous albums which Jerry Cantrell(guitarist) penned. The tunes on this album are more sludgy, heavy and hook filled as a whole. I must admit Cantrell was the better with lyrics but Staley could hold his own and if you dont believe it read the excellent lyrics, they are very cryptic and cathartic. Staley shows what it would have sounded like if he lead Alice in Chains instead of Cantrell on this record. "Heaven Beside You" is a very sorrowful and sweet number while other songs such as "Grind" and "Sludge Factory" display AiC at their most primal and raw. This is an excellent follow up to their multi platinum epic Dirt.

Free Music Review: Forgotten Greatness
Hit: 5 Stars

I find it very disapointing that when people talk about the greatest albums of the 90's, this one is largely forgotten. Alice in Chains was a very unique band, it was the only band I can think of that bridged the gap between fans of metal and the fans of the alternative/grunge scene. I tend to veiw this particular album as strictly a grunge album but many may see it differantly. This album came at a crossroads in the mid 90's when grunge was on the way out to make way for all the nu metal bands like Limp Bizkit and Korn. This album was the last true grunge album ever made as well as the last studio effort by AIC. All the tracks on this album are amazing, including the grammy nominated "Grind," but be sure to check out "God Am," "Again," and "Over Now."

Free Music Review: Amazingly complex
Hit: 5 Stars

Deep is the best one word description I could give this CD. There is so much going on that it could easily intimidate the first time Alice fan. Layers upon layers of guitar parts that weave intricately with the drums and bass and amazing vocals from both Layne and Jerry make this CD such a weird trip to listen to. This is dark, drug fueled metal sludge at its best! The music seems so dark and smothering at times, but then can quickly change to lighter moods without you even noticing. Listening to this CD when you're a little bent is great too, lol! Personal favorites on the CD include Brush Away, Sludge Factory, Shame in You, and Frogs. There's a lot of music in this CD to listen to and swallow, but it's well worth it.

Free Music Review: Crunchy, Existential Grunge
Hit: 5 Stars

AiC's final studio release fittingly projects a sense of finality and closure...songs like So Close, Over Now, and Head Creeps echo a sort of haunting acceptance of a cruel fate that perhaps Layne Staley was anticipating in the near future. Nonetheless the grit and existential nature of much of the album comes with crunchy guitar and wailing riffs to spare...a culmination of the "dirt" that had been AiC's signature until then. A good listen in accompaniment of some cynical circumspection of today's society and those who are left behind.

Great acoustic sounds in Over Now and Heaven Beside You, sludginess in Head Creeps and, yes, Sludge Factory, and introspection in Shame in You and God Am.

Free Music Review: Well, this is AIC!
Hit: 5 Stars

Alice In Chains will ever be my favorite grunge band and one of the best for me. They're very underrated, no shadow of a doubt. Most bands today claim they're grunge but use a poppy formula, like Creed, Puddle of Mud, Godsmack (yuck!), only to name a few.

Alice in Chains is immortal though.
You can notice hey're not in the same shape they were when they released Facelift or Dirt but there are so many memorable moments here that can't be counted.

I particularly love Grind, Sludge Factory, Haeven Beside You, Again, God Am, Nothin' Song and Over Now. These are classics.
Alice In Chains: whether you like it or not, it is the best grunge band on the planet and will always be.
