Free Music Notes for FaceliftFree Music Review: THIS JUST SHOWS HOW GOOD THIS BAND WAS TO COME Hit: 5 Starsthis was released back when metal was getting bad this put a nice blow and fixed the metal seen the only problem i have is the fact that laynes voice doesnt have the torture and despair of personal hate and heroin like in the latter years. but their best song on the album is in my opinion is we die young. which i heard was the first song they ever did to appeal to the metal audience and they succeeded.
Free Music Review: This is a great CD! Hit: 4 StarsIf you get AIC's "Dirt" and like it beyond the shadow of any doubt, then you'll like Facelift. The hell with saying its for metal fans, it's good music.
Free Music Review: Somewhere between the 80s and 90s lies "Facelift" Hit: 4 StarsIf you were to ask most people on the street what genre Alice In Chains were part of, they'd probably respond by saying "grunge." While Alice In Chains could be described as grunge; with their Sabbath-like sludgy guitars and growling vocals, they could just as accurately be labeled hard-rock or metal. While Nirvana and Soundgarden were influenced by Iggy and the Stooges and Black Flag, Alice in Chains paid just as much homage to Van Halen, albeit with heavier, more grinding riffs. Alice in Chains debut album "Facelift" makes this abundantly clear.
Released in 1990, "Facelift" has an 80s feel to it. Like many other rock albums released in the late 80s/early 90s, "Facelift" is heavy on melody and sing-along-choruses. That is not to say that "Facelift" doesn't have the classic AIC sound; it's just that "Facelift" has some of the staples of the time in which it was released.
"Facelift" pays equal homage to both Black Sabbath and Van Halen. It has the slow, grinding riffs and downbeat, nihilistic themes of Sabbath, but also the screeching solos and urgency of early VH. It's no small wonder why AIC opened up for Van Halen in the early 90s.
While "Facelift" isn't the strongest album in the AIC catalogue, it is still a fine album. It contains some of the bands best songs, and ultimately some of the best rock singles of the 1990s. And even the songs that aren't quite up-to-par are still pretty good.
The first half of "Facelift" is quite strong with the intense "We Die Young," and "Man in a Box." Both songs, which are usually played back-to-back on the radio, are two of the band's best, most memorable singles. The highly underrated mid-tempo "Sea of Sorrow" and "Bleed the Freak" slow the album down a bit, without causing it to loose momentum. The drudging "I Can't Remember" and "Love Hate Love," are quite good, if not a tad overlong.
The first half of "Facelift" is so strong, the mid-section seems to pale in comparison. Much of the second half of the album, "It ain't like that," "Sunshine" "Put You Down," and "Confusion" are good enough, but not great. Fortunately, the album ends on a high note with the sinister "I know something about you" and the brooding, but catchy "Real Thing."
While "Facelift" isn't Alice In Chains best work, it is more than a respectable debut. While the band would continue to improve with subsequent releases, "Facelift" was a good foundation from which a great band was built. It also serves as a sort of midpoint, between 80s and 90s American hard rock.
Free Music Review: Real Thing Hit: 4 StarsMany heavy bands are out there,in my opinion though there is only a good handful of them and Alice In Chains is one of them.
Alice In Chains is no doubt the heaviest grunge band out( doesn't mean the best though).Just think of them as metal.Anyways,"Facelift", is a very good overall album.Though many casual listeners will pick this up for the first two songs. As they are the most familiar radio play wise, but actually end up enjoying the rest of the songs.
Now even though "We Die Young" and "Man In The Box" are two fairly big songs don't forget you still have 10 more enjoyable songs.
"Sea Of Sorrow" "Confusion" and "Love Hate Love"
are three other solid songs that are on this album.Though you
may notice the whole album seems a slight bit lighter after the first two tracks."I Can't Remember" is my favorite as it is probly to many others, opening with a chilling acoustic intro and ending with heavily distorted guitars this is AiC prime.
Basically if you are caught up in the whole grunge era buy this album. If you like metal buy this album. If you just like overall decent music buy this album.
Free Music Review: Grunge(where it is) Hit: 5 StarsFirst of all,to let you know where I'm comming from,Alice In Chains is probably one of the top bands of all time.At least in my book.Although Facelift is probably not THE Grunge alblum,it does hit very hard and after the first four songs you are literly dazed and confused.Looking back now as I have done many times before at my collection of cd's,there are so many ways I compare them to Facelift, now more then ever. This cd gets more dreary then grungey.Buy this cd if you wanna know what the word Gruge realy is.In reality it means soulful, electric blues. This cd embraces the more funkyer type, almost jazz like blues with a hint of 80's rock and roll.In my opinion this is what defined the years when Jimmi and Cream ruled and Led Zepplen and Black Sabbath stoled and took off with...say what?
