Free Music Notes for LiveFree Music Review: LIVE! - AS REAL AS IT GETS! Hit: 5 Stars
I purchased "LIVE!" on the day it was released. A live Alice In Chains CD had been long overdue. There was a prior live CD, "MTV UNPLUGGED", but that's different. "UNPLUGGED" is a come in, sit down, dim the lights, fire up some candles, and play some laid back music for a television audience kind of thing mainly directed by the suits at MTV and Columbia Records. Somewhat like going to a church service. Don't get me wrong, any church service led by Layne Staley and Jerry Cantrell is going to be damn interesting church service, and well worth adding to your CD collection, it's just . . . well . . . not the Alice In Chains live CD I had been longing for."LIVE!" is the REAL DEAL! "LIVE!" is to Alice In Chains as "From The Muddy Waters Of The Wishkah" was to Nirvana. "LIVE!" is Alice In Chains the way an Alice In Chains concert was - LOUD! Jerry Cantrells guitars are crisp, Layne Staleys vocals are awesome, and the rest of the band is tight. Sure, they may misfire once or twice among the tracks from the '86 shows, but nothing demeaning in any way. The track list is top notch and the sound quality is superb. The AIC standards are here, Man In The Box, Bleed The Freak, Angry Chair, Rooster, Would, Them Bones, etc. Queen Of The Rodeo is one of those rarities that no AIC fan should be without. My only real complaint with the track list is the omission of a live version of Down In A Hole. All things considered, LIVE represents an excellent Alice In Chains concert. If you don't already own any of their live stuff, then buy LIVE first, and then go for MTV UNPLUGGED. Both are ESSENTIAL ALICE IN CHAINS.
Free Music Review: Satisfies the ALICE Urge . . . Hit: 5 Stars
It was kinda strange that the only official live Alice record for a while was UNPLUGGED. Great album, but it missed at least half the story. This album captures the brooding menace of live, ELECTRIC Alice In Chains.
This is a collection of performances culled from different stages in their short career. Some of these versions are slower and sludgier than the originals - not necessarily a bad thing. Clearly, a few do pale a bit in comparison to the original versions, in particular "Would?" (even though it still rocks). On the other hand, there's a few songs like "Dam That River" that set the originals ablaze.
Of note is a non-album, early recording called "Queen of the Rodeo" which alternates between ambling country-rock and thrash-punk (the thrashiest thing on here actually). It's a riot. "A Little Bitter" is the other non-album track and a taste of where the band would've headed had they not . . . self-destructed - R.I.P. Layne Staley, truly one of the best heavy-rock voices the world has ever heard.
You can definitely get your doom & gloom, heavy rockin' monster fed with LIVE!
Free Music Review: Perfect for fans who never got to see the band perform live Hit: 5 Stars
Of course the preferred thing would be if Alice in Chains would release a brand new studio album... but rather than that they have put out several comp cds over the past few years. I actually don't mind this since it alludes to them still being a current band. This might be different if each of these past few discs had been stale and boring but they all seem to hold their own.I like LIVE especially because I never got to see the band perform in concert. The 14 tracks span all of their career and include some lesser played songs as well as some of the big hits. Choosing a favorite would be an impossible task but the stand out track, "Queen of the Rodeo" which has always been popular here in Dallas at least is finally included on a wide released disc! Whether or not you have all these songs on their original cds you should get this one too because it really gives a new life to them.
Free Music Review: We Needed A Live Release Hit: 5 Stars
Being a true-blue AIC fan, I was glad to see this release available. I waited a year to purchase it, and purchased it used as well. But what I heard was what I didnt hear by not seeing this Excellent Rock band live. I regret now not putting forth the effert to see them. This CD is what Rock is all about. Sometimes I couldn't believe that this was a three instrument band. The early '93 cuts are excellent !!! If your an AIC fan as I am, you must purchase this CD. The '96 cuts are lacking somewhat because of the mixing, and Layne has pretty much lost interest by then. I wish that they would have skipped the Unplugged CD and did another electric studio effert. All tracks were good, but Love,Hate, Love may be the best live Rock ballad Ive ever heard. It was worth the price of this used CD alone. If your an AIC fan, get this CD. You have to put on some Live AIC to wake up the neighborhood.
Free Music Review: One of the greatest live albums?? Hit: 5 Stars
Having just listened to this CD for the first time, I am impressed to the point of considering it as one of the great live albums, right up there with Live on Two Legs (Pearl Jam), and Live at Leeds (The Who). AIC just have a certain energy, a certain stigma live that puts them head and shoulders above most of the barely-average bands permeating the scene today. That power is more than evident on 'Them Bones', 'Love Hate Love', 'Again', and a monstrous juggernaut of a rendition of 'Junkhead'. There's a genuine feeling there, a power that most bands today just don't have.A double CD might have been nice (Down in a Hole, Heaven Beside You, and What the Hell Have I are strangely absent, along with a few others)... but all in all this stands as a top notch live encapsulation of the one of the great bands of the nineties.
