Free Music Notes for LiveFree Music Review: This album is AWESOME! Hit: 4 Stars
Has Alice in Chains broken up? The official word is "no", but releases from the band are DEFINETLY few and far between. Although the Music Bank Box Set and the Nothing Safe disc both contained live tracks, it's excellent to finally have an official live Alice CD to listen to.I first heard about this album on the radio, and happened to be in a local Newbury Comics store and saw it on the shelf. Being an AIC fan I instantly grabbed it, got it home and through it in my cd player. This CD is fabulous -- it captures all of the agression, depression, power and fury of Alice in Chains' music and their live performances, stuffs it all down and crams it onto a five inch disc. The tracks are all great, and there's a good variety on the cd --spanning there 13 year career. This is an essential recording and a must-own for any Alice in Chains fan. My only complaint with this is that it should've been two CDs. Well, perhaps that's an unfair complaint, but with such a long career there's a hell of a lot more great material than what's on here. Perhaps Alice in Chains and their record label, Columbia, will follow the example of Jimi Hendrix's label, "Experience Hendrix" and continue to release live and rare cds in the future. We can only hope. And if anyone from the band happens to stumble upon this and read it, we're all still hoping and praying for another studio album from you guys. ;-) ~ CuRmuDgeoN
Free Music Review: A bit out of depth here... Hit: 4 Stars
Ordinarily, this is nowhere near my type of music, but I felt dared to write a comprehensible review and I decided to take the dare!I did have to tune myself in gradually, like playing at low volume first. Probably sounds foolish to you guys...those into this music can't understand why people like me have problems with it. Well, anyway, after a few listens, increasing volume a bit each time, I could easier relate to the music. Now I fully realize that my reaction is that of an outsider...I won't hide that. Basically, the music here is absolute depressive and I could say oppressive. There is no joy here, only an unrelenting feeling of fatalism, the percussion here sounding like the sound of doom itself. And yet, I can not deny the power. This is music that, until I acclimate myself, hurts my ears, and yet I can feel a power, a message coming across. Trouble is, I don't think I like the message because most of it is so cheerless. But then, that's what it is supposed to be so I can't criticize. After spending several hours, but only one hour at a sitting, I have separated myself from the absolute bashers of this music. It does definitely communicate at a primal level. I think my growing understanding of world music from the African culture helps. Now if only the power of the sound of this music could be more uplifting....
Free Music Review: 4-1/2 stars, Live Hit: 4 Stars
I have not had the chance to ever see alice in chains live, so I thought I would just go ahead and pick up A.I.C's first electric live album. Well, of course having all 3 alice in chains studio albums, jar of flies, and nothing safe I was not expecting a let down at all. One of the keys to every great band and to accurately see em is upon how there live ablities are, and alice in chains deliver a suiteable live show. The tracks "bleed the freak" and the seemingly dark houmourish vibe "queen of the Rodeo" are very great tunes to start off with. While tunes like "angry chair", "rooster", "man in the box", and "would" show awsome engergy. While the later half of the album primarily consists of tracks form there third album or "tripod", and of whitch I was not particularly impressed with the album, but were alright live. While I hope that sometime in the near future columbia decides to realse at least two more live albums. 3 studio album and 2 EP's, and of whitch all have very good tunes have at least 2 more like album to comback upon. To the casual AIC fan, I would go pick this up. But to the hardcore I could see some dissapointing factors here, but the sound quality isn't that bad.
Free Music Review: WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN? Hit: 4 Stars
THIS ALBUM GIVES YOU A GOOD EXAMPLE OF THE BANDS RISE AND DEMISE,IT HAS MUSIC FROM 1990 UP TO 1996 THERE LAST LIVE PERFORMANCE.IT IS SAD TO ME BECAUSE I AM SUCH A HUGE FAN OF ALICE IN CHAINS AND ESPECIALLY LAYNE STALEY WHO I CONSIDER TO BE ONE OF THE BEST SINGERS TO COME OUT IN THE LAST 10 YEARS.THIS ALBUM SHOWS YOU WHAT WAS AND WHAT COULD HAVE AND SHOULD HAVE BEEN BE IT NOT FOR STALEYS DRUG PROBLEMS,THE FIRST SEVERAL TRACKS SHOW YOU THE BANDS GREAT LIVE SOUND AND OF COURSE THE POWER STALEY HAS IN HIS VOICE,THE LAST 5 SONGS FROM 1996 ARE GOOD MUSICALLY BUT YOU CAN HERE THE DECLINE STALEY HAS TAKEN AND IT IS JUST PLAIN DEPRESSING BECAUSE THE FIRST TRACKS SHOW YOU WHAT HE SHOULD STILL SOUND LIKE AND IT BUMS YOU OUT TO SEE SO MUCH TALENT BEING DESTROYED,DON'T GET ME WRONG HE STILL SOUNDS GOOD BUT NOT THE SAME YOU CAN HEAR THE WEAKNESS.ALL IN ALL THE ALBUM IS A GOOD RETROSPECTIVE OF A BAND I PUT RIGHT BEHIND LED ZEPPELIN ON THE DIVERSITY LIST,AND A GOOD EXAMPLE OF HOW DRUGS CAN DESTROY A PERSON WITH SOME MUCH TO GIVE.
Free Music Review: Memories Of An Awesome Band Hit: 4 Stars
Sometimes forgotten by the rock mainstream, Alice In Chains is Seattle's red-headed stepchild. With so much of the focus on Nirvana and Pearl Jam, AIC quietly recorded some of the best music of the ninety's. Layne Staley's awesome voice, along with Jerry Cantrell's great guitar and backing vocals led the way. This CD is a pretty good example of how they were not only a great studio band, but an awesome live act. It is a good blend of the more well known AIC songs mixed with classics known more to hardcore AIC fans. My only complaint is the ommission of two of my personal favorites, "It Aint Like That", and "Heaven Beside You" Of course this is only my opinion, and you probably don't give a damn, but I would've liked them included. That's not a reason to pass this one up though. Not perfect, but close enough for hungry Alice In Chains fans. Peace
