Free Music Review: Repackage Number Four
Hit: 2 Stars

What an incredible disappointment from one of the premier musical talents of the 90's. Alice in Chains as a creative unit has been dead for over five years, they should be allowed retire peacefully, but more importantly, with some semblance of respect. This continual re-issuing of "greatest hits", and "greatest hits in disguise" is only causing many to lose respect for a band that was once held in the highest regard. This mess originated with the release of the Unplugged album, then you have an official greatest hits album. These were followed by a laughable, poorly conceived box-set. This just in ... there is a right and a wrong way to do a box-set. Much to the chagrin of many fans, AIC chose the latter. Typically, one could assume that those willing to shed fifty in cabbage are only the most ardent of the AIC fanbase. These people are already going to have the entire AIC catalogue, and are seeking demos, live tracks, and unreleased songs. 3 CD's worth of material of this sort would have been great. What did we get? Just over a dozen tracks we didn't already own, over 3 dozen we did, and a heap of disappointment. This brings us to the fourth and latest greatest hits album - AIC LIVE. Six of the tracks on this CD can be found as B-sides on the "Heaven Beside You" import singles. Adding insult to injury, is that when Layne is introducing "Love, Hate, Love" - they edited out his profanity-laced dedication to the "special little girl". Also, the live version of "Rooster" was just included on the official greatest hits album (Nothing Safe). Many bootlegs thrash this corporate nonsense, spend the extra ten clams and pick one of those up instead. It's a shame the boys have let themselves get pushed down these roads. On paper, the idea of an AIC live album has immense potential. Unfortunately for many fans, the paper is far as that potential made it.

Free Music Review: Perfect for fans who never got to see the band perform live
Hit: 5 Stars

Of course the preferred thing would be if Alice in Chains would release a brand new studio album... but rather than that they have put out several comp cds over the past few years. I actually don't mind this since it alludes to them still being a current band. This might be different if each of these past few discs had been stale and boring but they all seem to hold their own.

I like LIVE especially because I never got to see the band perform in concert. The 14 tracks span all of their career and include some lesser played songs as well as some of the big hits. Choosing a favorite would be an impossible task but the stand out track, "Queen of the Rodeo" which has always been popular here in Dallas at least is finally included on a wide released disc!

Whether or not you have all these songs on their original cds you should get this one too because it really gives a new life to them.

Free Music Review: Sad testament to the power that ws ALICE IN CHAINS
Hit: 5 Stars

As a huge fan, it's sad to see what the promise of this great band turned into at the end. This cd is divided into 1/3's. The first is taken from the LIVE FACELIFT video and shows a hungry AIC kicking major butt. Then the 2nd 1/3 shows the band at the top of the game and just stunningly brilliant around the time DIRT came out. And then the sad part where the final show is captured on here and the sound of Layne's straining voice seals the tomb on this influential band. Hopefully one day AIC will return in better health and spirits and reclaim the title KINGS OF GRUNGE. A band that is sorely missed and showes what the devil of addiction can do to the human spirit.

Free Music Review: Fans Thrown a Bone
Hit: 3 Stars

It's too bad Alice In Chains couldn't have released a live CD that was reasonable in quality and content. One thought crossed my mind as I listened and tried to develop an acquired taste for the latest release: there's no way this could be the same band!!!! Obviously, the worst was listening to "Them Bones" --a thirteen year old boy could carry a better tune. The second worst element was listening to the vocals--lead singer L.S. sounded like his teeth were about to fall out. But hey, I guess releasing "Live" was better than nothing.

Free Music Review: One of the greatest live albums??
Hit: 5 Stars

Having just listened to this CD for the first time, I am impressed to the point of considering it as one of the great live albums, right up there with Live on Two Legs (Pearl Jam), and Live at Leeds (The Who). AIC just have a certain energy, a certain stigma live that puts them head and shoulders above most of the barely-average bands permeating the scene today. That power is more than evident on 'Them Bones', 'Love Hate Love', 'Again', and a monstrous juggernaut of a rendition of 'Junkhead'. There's a genuine feeling there, a power that most bands today just don't have.

A double CD might have been nice (Down in a Hole, Heaven Beside You, and What the Hell Have I are strangely absent, along with a few others)... but all in all this stands as a top notch live encapsulation of the one of the great bands of the nineties.
