Free Music Review: As good as any 80 minutes of Alice in Chains can get, but 80 minutes is not enough for Alice in Chains
Hit: 5 Stars

Let's get one thing straight right here at the start. "Best of..." CDs are good for 1 group of people only; those who are not fans of the band but like a few of their songs. A fan of any band will buy all their CDs and only a best of CD if it releases a song not available anywhere else.

This CD IS the best of the best of CDs you can get from Alice in Chains, bar none. However, Alice in Chains has roughly 120 minutes of top notch music to listen to, and a CD can only carry 80 minutes. So while every single song on this CD deserves to be here there are about a dozen other songs that deserve to be here every bit as much, in some cases even more.

That said, if you don't know much about Alice in Chains but like what little of them you have heard, buy this CD, no questions asked. It's worth your money. However you'd be doing yourself a disservice if you left it at that. After you listen to this CD a few times and get to know it, ask yourself whether you liked the heavy metal, or the soft rock they performed more.

If you liked the heavy metal do yourself a favor and buy Dirt. God Smack, Rain when I Die, & Dam That River are all hard rock songs that deserve to be on this CD and are found on Dirt.

If you liked the softer side of Alice buy both of their EPs SAP and Jar of Flies, together they'll cost you about the same as a regular CD and you'll get 12 soft rock songs that will blow you away. Rotten Apple & Nutshell & Don't Follow from Jar of Flies, as well as Brother & Right Turn (Right Turn performed with Chris Cornell from Soundgarden & Audioslave) from SAP all deserve to be on this CD.

If you liked it all then by all means get all the CDs, but if you want to save yourself some money buy the box set this very CD samples. This box set afterall has 2 songs that deserve to be on this CD but CAN NOT BE FOUND ANYWHERE ELSE. Died & Fear the Voices are both songs that exemplify the very best of AIC's heavy metal songs and have gotten plenty of air time on good rock stations. Not only that but you'll also get the song A Little Bitter which can only be found on the Last Action Hero Soundtrack and is likewise a great song. It will also cover pretty much every other great song Alice in Chains has ever done. Off the top of my head I can't think of a single song of theirs that I enjoy that's not in the box set, though I'm sure there's probably a couple. -Shame in You would be 1 such example. It's not one of their greatest hits, but I've always thoroughly enjoyed it and it's one of those songs not found in the box set.

Use your head, don't sell yourself short. This band deserves more than 80 minutes. Don't be afraid to try their other CDs. You won't likely be disappointed. And for those fans of Alice in Chains that have their first 5 albums but lack this 1, do yourself a favor and buy the whole box set, there's roughly 12 new songs you won't have and 5 of them you are bound to love to death (Get Born Again, Fear the Voices, Died, A Little Bitter, & What the Hell Have I?)

Free Music Review: A good Best Of collection.
Hit: 5 Stars

This is a great Alice In Chains collection. The only knocks against it are the regretful failure to include their classic Heaven Beside You, and the version of Rooster included is not the studio version (though I would argue that this live version of Rooster is at least as good as the studio one.)

The existance of this CD pretty much makes "Alice In Chains' Greatest Hits" obsolete. The aforementioned greatest hits is a good package, and a good deal if you find it in the rack for 7 or 8 bucks, but not at all worth it when you consider the wealth of material you'll be getting in addition to that if you spend a few more bucks on this Nothing Safe Best of the Box collection. The only song not included on Nothing Safe that is included on Greatest Hits' is Heaven Beside You, and Nothing Safe contains MANY essential Alice tunes that the other neglected.

Let's take a look at the songs... It opens with the fantastic reqiuem style heavy metal dirge, Get Born Again, a song not released on any of AIC's straight studio albums. Then it moves on to the incredible demo version of We Die Young, as hard hitting and energetic as Metallica and at least as cool. This set really contains so many of Alice In Chains' most triumphant and sweetest moments. The powerhouse Them Bones, the ultimate depressed ballad Down In The Hole, the emotional Got Me Wrong, the power-hitting sorrowful metal cry of Angry Chair, the anthemic Rooster, the brilliantly brooding Grind, the archetypal AIC acoustic song No Excuses, and all of the songs on the album are good and listenable... except for one. They foolishly put the one worst AIC song ever onto this compilation. Don't worry, it's only 15 seconds long, but "Iron Gland" shouldn't ever be included on an AIC compilation. I would have liked some more Unplugged too... Sludge Factory maybe?

Do not buy this album if you're a hardcore Alice In Chains fan. The album opener, Get Born Again, is absolutely sweet and worth it, but if you're a die-hard fan then you'd be a fool to get this album because later on you'll be wanting the full Music Bank box set and you'll have Nothing Safe entirely full of songs you already have. (If you're the kind of person that likes to have a nice hits mix to throw in your CD player though, it'd still be a good choice even if you are a hardcore fan.) But if you're an average AIC fan then this would be a great CD for you. You should probably collect most of the songs on this album with the other AIC albums, but there is absolutely no denying the quality of the material on this disc!

Free Music Review: The Best Of One Of The Best Bands From The '90's.
Hit: 5 Stars

As pathetic as I am, I only really opened myself up to Alice In Chains back in 2000 -- with this collection. I pretty much grew up in the nineties, and was well aware of both Alice In Chains and the massive musical movement we all know as "grunge." Nirvana and Soundgarden were (and still are) two of my biggest fixations, but I guess A.I.C. just slipped under the radar. Which seems very fitting to their career and how the industry has accepted, or rather, rejected, them. To give a good example, when Layne Staley died back in 2002, the issue of Rolling Stone that came out following had Kurt Cobain on the cover -- who died 8 years prior to the fact, and had already graced the cover numerous times -- with a small blurb about Layne hidden inside. To me, this is the perfect example of how this extremely gifted, unique, and consistently influential band was always ignored. But I digress. What "Nothing Safe" does is compile some of Alice In Chains' more familiar radio tunes, with some surprising treats thrown in for fun. The last official Alice In Chains recording, "Get Born Again," is worth buying this collection for alone, even if you own all of their previous material. Layne was still in top form, his vocals just as empowering and eerie as ever. The big hits like "Man In The Box," "Down In A Hole" and "Would" are presented in their original forms, while an enticing demo version of "We Die Young" is well appreciated, as is a live version of "Rooster." "Got Me Wrong" is pulled from their brilliant "MTV Unplugged" release, which is another good starting point, along with this, to initiate yourself with the band. Overall, the tracklisting is very nice and definitely outshines the "other" Greatest Hits collection out there. My only complaint, which is natural with all Greatest Hits releases is that is skips over some songs which I believe to be essential to the band's history. One of the most obvious ommissions: "Heaven Beside You," a song that I still hear time to time on the radio. But the underrated "Love Hate Love" and my personal favorite A.I.C. track, "Nutshell," would have made this perfect. But, complaints aside, it's a great compilation and serves as a good springboard to more Alice In Chains, a band which any hard-rock/heavy metal fan will love.

Free Music Review: Best! "Best Of" Album From One Of The Best Bands Ever
Hit: 5 Stars

Alice In Chains was one of the most influential bands ever walked the face of the earth that many bands wanted to copy,
but unfortunately all of them failed. Nobody can imitate the power, pain, and passion of Layne Staley's heartfelt vocal
delivery. Hell, this guy can move mountains. One of my favourite vocalists of all time. While Jerry Cantrell, the Axeman
of the band, he can shred your face into bits and also delivers insane mind-blowing chaotic solos. He wrote most of the
songs played by the band and he also wrote one of the most beautiful songs ever written and that's Would? Together, Layne
Staley and Jerry Cantrell as everyone have said are the Best Duo of the 90's. Alice in Chains is not purely a Grunge band
like Nirvana and Pearl Jam but they're also a Hard Rock and a Metal band. They are darker than Nirvana and heavier
than Pearl Jam.

Now, unto the album, this is the first ever "Best Of" album released by the band and this one is much better
compared to the "Greatest Hit" album released a year after because it has all the tracks except "Heaven Beside You" with
this album.

01. Get Born Again - The unreleased hit, good song
02. We Die Young (Demo) - This track is more Metalesque than the original album version, one of my fave
03. Man In The Box - One of my fave tracks
04. Them Bones - Metal \m/
05. Iron Gland - This track has Tom Araya in it, the Dream Sequence taken from the Dirt album
06. Angry Chair - Another fave track of mine
07. Down In A Hole - Beautiful song, also my fave
08. Rooster (Live) - Cool calm song
09. Got Me Wrong (MTV Unplugged) - One of my fave tracks taken from the MTV Unplugged sessions
10. No Excuses - Cool song
11. I Stay Away - Another cool song
12. What The Hell Have I - Nice guitar intro, another good track
13. Grind - This is also a cool heavy track.
14. Again - Cool Solo, cool song
15. Would? - The greatest track of all by Alice In Chains... I love this song... My favourite Song

Every song in this album is a Hit, so what are you waiting for? Highly Recommended.
