Free Music Notes for Nothing SafeFree Music Review: Amazing Hit: 5 Stars
Now I'm sort of a newbie to AIC, and this was my first album I picked up. Seemed logical to get the "best of" first. This is one of the best CDs I've ever heard. Very dark, heavy, depressing, provacative, and intelligent. Track by track: 1. Get Born Again (Demo) -***1/2- Great dark opening riff. Recorded in 1998, Layne sounds just as awesome as ever. 2. We Die Young -*****- This is a previously unreleased demo of song. Probably the best on the album. Very metal. 3. Man In The Box -****- Goes without saying that this is one of AIC's best songs. 4. Them Bones -****- Another classic. 5. Iron Gland -**1/2- Just that weird little "Iron Man" thing from 'Dirt'. 6. Angry Chair -***1/2- Very cool rock song. 7. Down In a Hole -***1/2- Soft change in the pace. Great stuff. 8. Rooster (Live) -****1/2- Very surprised by this. I always sort of thought that this song was overrated, but this version made me love it. Even better than the studio version. Much slower and darker. 9. Got Me Wrong (Unplugged) -***- Nice song. 10.No Excuses -***- Another one of their radio staples. Very good tune, although a little light for AIC. 11.I Stay Away -****- Quite possibly AIC's biggest hit. Excellent. 12.What The Hell Have I -***1/2- Cool rare song from the "Last Action Hero" soundtrack. 13.Grind -*****- Arguably the heaviest track on here. Brilliant. The title fits its "grinding" metal melody perfectly. 14.Again -*****- This was the song that got me seriously hooked on AIC. Like 3 songs in one. Absolutely have fallen in love with this song. 15.Would? -****1/2- Awesome. I would highly recommend this album to any fan of grunge, rock, or heavy metal.
Free Music Review: (Almost)Definitive Collection of a Great Band Hit: 5 Stars
This is it, folks. You won't hear a better best-of from any band as "Nothing Safe," chronicalling AIC's brilliant career. There's no need to waste money on the earlier "Greatest Hits" album, which contains fewer hits, zero new songs like "Get Born Again" and the demo version of "We Die Young" heard on "Nothing Safe," and sounds less than steller. OK, as in most greatest hits collections, there's always too few hits from the band you can put to record (or disk)for a serious hardcore fan like me, and so "Nothing Safe" is missing a few songs I consider essential: "Dirt," the title track from their breakthrough second album (a number that's played as often as "Would" on today's rock radio stations); "Heaven Beside You," which, along with "Rooster," happens to be one of AIC's best musical efforts (still puzzeled why they excluded it here- even "Greates Hits" has it!); and "Sludge Factory," another winning track from their self-titled 1995 album. Still, I guess "Nothing Safe" works as an incentive to listen to other AIC's work, and I am certainly greatful that this collection has persuaded me to check out their other albums. Plus, there's no denying that a handful of the classics, as well as a few surprises, are prominantly featured. If you are a first time fan, this is the starting point for your AIC collection. RIP Layne Staley- You and your band will truely be missed.
Free Music Review: AiC 101 Hit: 5 Stars
This CD is really an essential. It packs AiC's entire career up to this point into a nice one CD package. Sure, it omits a lot of cool stuff, like Heaven Beside You, but there's still so much great stuff on here that any fan would be satisfied.Of course, many tracks on this album come from AiC's biggest album, Dirt, with a few from each of their other releases thrown in for good measure. The studio tracks are all great, but then what else would you expect from "the best of the Box"? All the big hits are here, including Would?, I Stay Away, Man In The Box, Down In A Hole... you know the drill. Of much more interest are tracks that do not come from previous studio albums by Alice In Chains. Get Born Again is a pretty cool new song, certainly a good incentive to pick this CD up. The demo for We Die Young just ROCKS, while the live version of Rooster is simply incredible, showing off the band's overall talent very well. The acoustic version of Got Me Wrong, from MTV Unplugged, is also great, even if Layne Staley sounds like he has some of his teeth missing at times. Overall, a must-buy for every serious rock music fan who doesn't already have the box set.
Free Music Review: Great album....... PERFECT for Alice newcomers. Hit: 5 Stars
I am a HUGE AIC fan, and I posess every single one of their albums... Nothing Safe is an interesting hit collection, with very little new material... I bought it, and, simply because of Get Born Again, I was satisfied... The song is fantastic... every single song on here is excellent, and I listen to it, because I love listening to each single nonstop, without having to rotate cds every minute... If you have never heard of AIC, or if you have only heard one or two songs (Rooster, Heaven Beside You, Man In The Box...) BUY IT RIGHT NOW! You will not be unsatisfied.... Columbia did a good job in placing all of the singles there, but I was mad that some Alice non-single classics were missing! Dam That River, Nutshell, Dirt, Junkhead, Hate To Feel, Brother, Sunshine, and Sludge Factory, just to name a few, were completely looked over... Oh, well. There's always the box set, which looks to be incredible... The new single, "Fear The Voices" KICKS! GO ALICE IN CHAINS! (Also..... If AIC put one of their comedy tracks on this record [Iron Gland], why not put.... LOVE SONG!!! HUH??? HUH????)
Free Music Review: It's about time......... Hit: 5 Stars
A lot of fans might think this is pre-mature of this great rock band to put out a greatest-hits collection (or even a box set), but they're missing the point. This band is currently at a crossroads between the state of rock music changing and budding solo career(s) within the band, and what better way to wet the appetites of fans than to release this cd. This cd is a just a sampler of the music that will be available on the box set: Live cuts, soundtrack songs, b-sides, etc. I'd rather have "What the hell have I" on an AIC cd rather than buying the crummy soundtrack it was on.(I just hope "A little bitter" will be included on the box set-GREAT song!) If you're wondering what gems will be on the box set, try and find a cd entitled Alice in Chains super rare demos. They once sounded like a typical "80's" rock band a'la Ratt and/or Motley Crue! Hopefully, this talented and under-rated rock band WILL once again record a FULL studio album and tour again. These releases shouldn't be considered their "swan" song!
