Free Music Review: Well-gifted, jazz-influenced, R&B classic debut
Hit: 5 Stars

I did had to buy her second album 1st before I start getting her first album. I hear she's has a wonderful talent and a good voice 'cause she reminds me some greats I listen while in my childhood incl. Marvin Gaye, Ray Charles, Prince, Michael Jackson, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Duke Ellington, Aretha Franklin, Grover Washington Jr., Kool and the Gang, R. Kelly, Etta James, Mary J. Blige, Charlie Parker, and especially some hip-hop greats like 2Pac, Biggie, A Tribe Called Quest (who are my favorite rap groups 2 date incl. Kanye who is my other favorite), Jay-Z, Nas, Missy, Busta, and so on and on.

This is one of the original R&B/Neo-Soul Albums she put out in 2001. As to say, she's a classically-trained pianist (which many may request) and she has her own talents and proving that she'll make a success in the music industry. I believe that Alicia has it all since I start hearing her on TV (e.g. MTV, Vh1, BET, etc.) and on the radio too. The problem is I don't understand why a lot of people are calling her "A no success person" or why they say that this album sucks. 'cuz it's full of dull songs and/or ballads in or something. Believe me, I don't care. 'Cause I love the album and for those that don't but it would miss out a whole new era of R&B.

Anyway, long period short, When I start listen to this album, I heard originally about 6, 7, or so songs off the album. The reason why I didn't buy it yet while I was at school 'cause I had a lot of education to do. But now that I graduated from high school, I still have the oppurtunity to go out and get it.
Because I'm a big supporter to her and she's my inspiration to follow.

I luv the way when she walk out with 5 Grammys(back in '02) alongside Beyonce, Norah Jones, Lauryn Hill, etc. and begin talking a lot of interviews about where she begin a success as a solo artist and how she learned to play the piano at an early age. Orignally, she is a native of New York, a part of Manhattan, NY which I recall. I would love to come and work with her in the future. 'cause I'm 19 years old and I play the trumpet very professionally.

Well back to the album some of my favorite songs to date are Fallin, A Woman's Worth, How Come U Don't Call Me, The Life, Loving U, Troubles, etc. I hear she has special guests on the album incl. Brian McKnight (who is my favorite influence), Issac Hayes, Jimmy Cozier (whom I don't like much, but maybe 1 day I'll listen to him to see he's good), and Miri Ben-Ari (the hip-hop violinist who is about to put out an album in the spring of next year, I hear that her new single is doin' great since I download it.).

I still luv her as an artist and hope that she'll put more albums in the future. Peace and love ya'll.

(And especially check out her upcoming memoir entitled THE DIARY OF ALICIA KEYS of the same album coming up next year)

Free Music Review: SHE IS SO REAL!!!
Hit: 5 Stars

I love this girl because she is so real. She is not fake at all like Beyonce. She is one of those girls who don't give a damn. This CD is great and I hope she will become more successful in life.

Free Music Review: Well Crafted, Classy Debut.
Hit: 5 Stars

This lady is one of those rare artists right now that is truly talented. She's a pianist, lyricist and composer. And this album became a hot-seller not for its mediocre content (like those crappy teen albums) but for its quality.

I actually bought her sophomore LP before I get this one cos at that time I thought that the only good songs are the first and second singles; Fallin' and A Woman' Worth. I was like.. SO WRONG!

From the start Alicia captured your attention with the classy intro Piano & I. But I think she arranged the song in the wrong order. Girlfriend is so terrible it easily can be thrown out of the album. Jermaine Dupri failed to impress me on this one. BUT, after track 2 (which was the latter), you'll be mesmerized by the other songs. Ms Keys is an amazing vocalist and pianist. I was blown away when Fallin' made its debut on the radio. My ultimate favorites would've been Jane Doe (this is hot! The verses are actually better than the chorus. And her vocals were well-styled), Goodbye, Butterflyz (flawless piano arrangement; haunting at the same time but awesome song), Troubles, Why Do I Feel So Sad (this song really makes you sad, the mood of the song suits the lyrics. Amazing), Mr Man (a sexy duet with Jimmy Cozier. Kinda like salsa meets R&B). The only interlude in the album, Never Felt This Way is so great! I really feel what she's tryna put across on each song cuz the mood is there. If only it's a full-length song it would've been a hit. Truly inspiring.

Personally, this is one notch higher than her Diary album. I just felt that in this debut, the choice of singles were bad (apart from Fallin' and A Woman's Worth). There are other exceptionally good songs that really could be huge hits.
But all in all I really like this album. Been listening for quite a while now (since I bought it recently). Classy and soulful all in one. I feel ya Alicia!

Free Music Review: This album is worth every cent.....so there!!!
Hit: 5 Stars

I simply luv this album, its true talent shinning through and through, Alicia will go far, she's all about the music, all the emotions are conveyed so well.
I particually like Goodbye and Butterflies, along with classic tracks such as Fallin' & How come you don't call me anymore.
The only down sides to this album in my opinion are the Girlfriend & Jane Doe tracks, Girlfriend mainly I dislike but I think that has something to with the fact i can't stand JD and him on the track is just irritating.
However I do suggest you pick up the additonal remix tracks to the singles as they are phat too.
I prefere this album to The Diary of Alicia Keyes, but that is growing on me now, as did this album.
Give it chance and you'll soon realize this young lady has pure talent and isn't afriad to show it.

Free Music Review: Songs In A Minor by Alicia Keys
Hit: 4 Stars

"Songs in A Minor" was a very good debut album from New York native Alicia Keys. This album was not too far from being a five star. Alicia was a little too indulgent in the piano, it seems as though she used it as a latch. When one instrument is heard too much on an album, it makes the songs on the CD hard to distinguish sometimes. "Songs in A Minor" is a great example of that. Other than that, the CD is great. Good vocal arrangement, nice lyrics, a very mellow album, really. It's also nice how Alicia just speaks on her tracks sometimes. It gives the album a more intimate feel.
"Fallin'" is the first single from Alicia's debut CD. This song was a huge success. Alicia came out strong, she got her name recognized very quickly. The song included Alicia playing the piano. "Mr. Man" is a nice song. I like the jazzy feel of the song. It added something different to her album. "Goodbye" is one of the highlights of the album. A person trying to find a way to end a relationship they are unhappy in is the song's theme. Alicia has great vocals on this song and many people relate to the lyrics. "Troubles" is a nice song about letting anything that's troubling you go. This song is one of the more serious songs on the CD.
Alicia showed her listeners that she has skills on her first try with "Songs in A Minor. If you buy CD's based on their record sales, this CD was very successful on the Billboard charts. It went to number one and remained there for a number of weeks. 4 stars.

Mikeisha's Top 5
1. Goodbye
2. Mr. Man
3. Jane Doe
4. Troubles
5. A Woman's Worth
