If it wasn't for Michael Jackson's "Thriller", I would easily have to say that this is best album my ears have ever been blessed to hear. From start to finish this a complete album, neither over-produced or filled with uneeded guest appearances. The album is a collage of various music genres. Jazz, blues, r&b, hip-hop, neo-soul, and classical are all present in this masterpiece. "Fallin'" is without a doubt the best song on the album, highlighting Alicia's amazing vocals, and her superb piano playing. Like MJ's "Thriller", this album is as eclectic as they come. "Rock Wit U" has the 70's feel to it sampling from Issac Hayes, while "Mr. Man" is a mellow, mid-tempo track that features Jimmy Cozier another smooth-voiced r&b musician.
If you're looking for an album that brings something new to the table, "Songs in A Minor" is definately the album for you. Its eclectic mix of music genres can even be appeciated by the youngest of music fans.

I can imagine the look on a music mogul's face when Alicia Keys walked into his studio to sign a contract. Keys has class, beauty, brains, and plenty of musical talent. In all these years of Hip Hop Rappin Rappers waving their booty, we never thought we would see someone like this. Keys is a female version of Ray Charles. She is original and she is a breath of fresh air.
Songs in A Minor has great neo soul tracks, all written in, well, the key of A Minor. There is a little something for everyone. Her rich, mature voice lifts and cradles both the listener and the lyrics on the ballads like Caged Bird and Butterflies. She jams in Mr. Man and Girlfriend. Of course it won a Grammy for Best R&B album, of course Fallin' won a Grammy in 2002 for Best Song, of course she was voted best new artist. But that ends up being irrelevant, as she is a comet streaking far above anyone else.

This debut cd from Alicia Keys was a breathe of fresh air back in 2001. Remember the music industry had been going through the bubble gum pop phaise since 98' so it was good to hear from a young singer songwriter who could really deliver. Alicia's mix of r&b, jazz, & hiphop have been heard before like on the 1997 Taja Sevelle cd entitled Toys Of Vanity but it's still very good. We can also hear a little Whitney/Mariah influence in thier but Alicia does bring her own style into play. I strongly recommend this cd to r&b music lovers.
