Free Music Review: A Start of Another Real Beginning!!
Hit: 5 Stars

The album that introduced the world to the piano playin' R&B singer! With incredible talent, she has demonstrated you don't have to be a $l*t to sell records. She doesn't show her @$$ to get her point across. She is a respectable woman that has a lot to say. The way she sings and writes are outta this world. From the beginning of Songs In A Minor, you hear her piano playin' skills. Girlfriend(02) is a song that many women can relate to. You might trust your man, but you still have your suspicions. How Come You Don't Call Me(03) is a Prince remake. I love the video. Fallin(04), her star creation, is an original. Since the dramatic drop in the quality of R&B, this brings the bar back up to what it needs to be. Troubles(05) is my all time favorite on the album. It sounds like a Fallin' part two. A Woman's Worth(07) is her other signature song. The piano just stands out so much it's not funny. The Life(10) is a song with feeling and passion. I don't say that often, but I have to here. [Import]: I'm sorry yall, but I'm not feeling the Fallin' remix(18) with Busta Rhymes. I have nothing against him but he doesn't sound right rapping with Alicia. She should've had someone else do that song with her or just do a remix without anyone on there with her. She does not need a rapper to accent her. Her voice is too strong to have some weak @$$ rapper trying to compete with her on her own song! The A Woman's Worth remix(19) is what I'm talking about. It has soul, flavor, and a totally different sound from the Album Version. She even talks in Spanish yall! What a woman [End Import]. All in all, she has a rare talent that needs to be shared with the world. Haters just need to stop. Yall just jealous because yall wasted your money on someone else whack @$$ $h*t and can't get your money back for it.

Free Music Review: The Classics Are Coming Back
Hit: 5 Stars

The moment I heard "Fallin'" on Oprah, she put me in a trance. Never did I hear so many people sing that song. Never did I hear so much buzz about how good she was. The only thing that I kept hearing about her was how beautiful she was. Well, she has the brains and the talent to back those looks up. She'll be in the music industry for a long time to come, and "Fallin'" cemented her place in it. That song was meant for someone older than her years, but I could be wrong.

In a debut album, the artist tries their hand at being versatile; they, as well as the producers (she had a hand in all of it, I heard) pick out what they like, and good enough to put on an album so it could sell. I think she did really well.

I have to admit that in this debut, with all the "versatility", I couldn't make her out. We all have different sides to each of us, so she took her risks. Some panned out really well: "Fallin'" will always come first when I think of this album, "A Woman's Worth", "Troubles", "Rock Wit U", "Goodbye", and "The Life". Some of the other tracks were like a "take it or leave it" kind of thing.

I have to admit it, because I can't say that it showed signs of me appreciating my parents' music more or not: they actually loved this album, telling me that I got a hold of a classic. After listening to this multiple times, it reminded me of the music that my parents listened to in their day, and I'm finding out that I like their music more than the music today (in some respects, not all). She is a breath of fresh air, and I'm glad that she bridged the gap, so to speak. Although there are plenty of naysayers, I can definitely see why she won those Grammys. Good work, Alicia!

Free Music Review: A definite must have!

Great CD!

Intro- "You always got to try, no matter how long that should take." A great, inspiring song, though short and sometimes pronounced weird. No rating, since only an intro.

Girlfriend- A fun, upbeat song with a great tune. One of her best songs! "I think I'm jealous of your girlfriesd" 5/5

How Come You Don't Call Me- A good song with lots of rythym. "How come you don't call me anymore?" 5/5

Fallin- My favorite song by her! I think sometimes I can relate to it. "I keep on fallin' in and out of love with you" 5/5

Troubles- Too slow. But it is a good song. "If you're troubled, you just gotta let it go." 4/5

Rock Wit U- Not enough singing and too much music. "I wanna rock wit u" 4/5

A Womans Worth- Another one of her better songs. "You will lose if you choose to refuse to put her first" 4.5/5

Jane Doe- My second favorite on the cd, with lots of feeling. "Cause I'd be crazy to let my man go." 5/5

Goodbye- An OK song, yet I like the tune. "How do you find the words to say goodbye?" 4/5

The Life- My least favorite on the cd. "This is the life" 3/5

Mr. Man- One of my favorites! I like everything about it! "I don't wanna be unfair to Mr. Man." 5/5

Never Felt This Way- I like the piano chords in this one. "Never felt this way about love." 4/5

Butterflyz- Drags on a little too much. "You give me butterflyz, got me flyin' so high in the sky" 4/5

Why do I feel so sad?- An OK song. "But in times things must change." 4/5

Caged Bird- Slow, yet good. Talking about how she has no privacy and she's trapped inside her fans' worlds. "Through my smile I cry." 5/5

Lovin U- Great tune, lyrics, and vocals! "Lovin' U is easy!" 5/5

Free Music Review: WOW! AMAZING Debut from Ms. Alicia Keys
Hit: 5 Stars

I have own A FEW debut albums from my other current Favorite Breakthrough Favorite Female Popular Solo artists: Mariah Carey, Toni Braxton, Alanis Morissette, and Christina Aguilera. But after buying this "Songs In A Minor" CD, listening to ALL the songs, and seeing her latest ASTONISHING MTV VMA performance, I will personally ADMIT the following:

This is the BEST debut album of all those artists!!

Unlike my other favorite artists listed above. There's NOTHING negative I can say about the 20-year old Alicia Keys or the songs on her debut album. EVERY song on this album is GOOD, yet UNIQUE. She has an UNIQUE and SOULFUL singing voice, contributes to writing ALL her songs, produces her own music, plays the PIANO with SUCH GRACE. Plus, she seems like a down-to-earth and respectable person. WHAT MORE CAN YOU ASK FOR??

My favorite standout songs on this 16-track album, listed in order of preference:

Girlfriend
Goodbye
Jane Doe
Fallin'
Rock Wit You
Lovin' U
Why Do I Feel So Sad
A Woman's Worth
How Come You Don't Call Me

Another SHREWD prediction. I think Alicia Keys is going to "pull a Lauryn Hill" and win BOTH the Album of the Year and Best New Artist award at the 2002 Grammys. This album is THAT GOOD. This is one young potential artist who deserves ALL THE HYPE and COMMERCIAL SUCCESS she is getting. And she can ONLY GET BETTER!! GO BUY "Songs In A Minor" by Alicia Keys. Along with Christina Aguilera(whose 1999 debut album I HIGHLY RECOMMEND as well), we have 2 GREAT singers who will only get BETTER and should be around for the next 10 years...

Free Music Review: Songs In A Minor is definately worth listening to...
Hit: 5 Stars

Alicia Keys first burst upon the scene at the end of 2001 with her first single Fallin'. She then went on to impress everyone by winning five awards at the Grammys in the Febuary of 2002. After all the hype she recieved, everyone was anxious to see if she actually lived up to the hype she recieved. So did she? Well, in my opinion, yes she did. Her album starts out with an intro called Piano & I which she speaks about reaching goals and how she had to work to get to the spot she is now. It even has a sample of Moonlight Sonata playing in the background. It's followed by the hip hop-like track, Girlfriend with quick beats and Alicia explains that even though she's 'just a friend' of her boyfriend's she's worried about her stealing her guy. A similar track to this is Jane Doe, which is number eight on this album. The third song is How Come You Don't Call Me (Anymore), the anticipated cover of Prince's track and currently the third single. Alicia's voice is incredibly strong (one of the best tracks here), and she turns it into a more up-tempo track by the end. Fallin is next, and to me this is still the best track on the album. It has a slower, more mournful sound to it, and the best part is that many people young and old, male and female, can relate to this track. Troubles is my second favorite on the album, and is extra smooth and so is her beautiful voice here. Other note-worthy tracks are the depressing (but fantastic) Why Do I Feel So Sad and The Life. My advice: Go out and get this if you haven't already!
Top Five:
1. Fallin
2. Troubles
3. Why Do I Feel So Sad
4. How Come You Don't Call Me (Anymore)
5. The Life
