Free Music Review: One word: Incredible
Hit: 5 Stars

After listening to Alicia Keys' CD Songs in a Minor, I had one regret: that I hadn't bought it sooner. I usually don't buy CDs from new artists until I've at least heard the second single. So after I heard "A Woman's Worth" I RAN to the store to get it, and I was not disappointed. Here it is, almost a year later, and I STILL listen to this CD almost every day. Every song on here is great. Ms. keys is very talented as you can see from her singing, piano-playing, and song writing ability. A lot of singers (like the supposed Princess of Hip hop and R&B,Ashanti) write their own songs, but as one person who reviewed Ashanti's Cd said, "who couldn't write songs like happy and Foolish?" Alicia writes about the same things as Ashanti, but her lyrics are much more mature. Example: the song "fallin'" and "foolish". Both songs have the same concept, but Fallin' sounds much more real and mature. Anyway, its hard for me to pick out a favorite song on this CD, because all of them are great. I guess my favorites would be "fallin" "rock with you" and "never felt this way" (GREAT remake of a classic song. other artists take note: if you're going to do a remake of someone's song, do it justice as Ms. keys has done to Brian mcKnight and Prince's songs). The ONLY song on this CD that (to me) isn't all that great and sometimes gets the SKIP button, is "The Life". One listen to this CD and you can easily see that Alicia deserved all five of her Grammys and the sixth one, that she lost. I can't wait for the next Cd to come out (hopefully it will be soon.)

Free Music Review: the best CD I ever bought
Hit: 5 Stars

When I first bought the album I was skeptical of it because I thought she was an unfortunate one hit wonder. Fallin had been on the radio since May and I bought this in early August. Here's the track summary.

1.Piano & I :I expected some corny track but this is an awesome intro, smooth, a nice beat and her voice is so relaxing.

2.Girlfriend: Kind of sounds like a pop producer song, but it's a great song- very good lyrics.

3.How Come You Don't Call Me: This sounds like something you'd heard in the late 50's. Great, mellow, excellent vocals.

4.Fallin: Yes, it's old but its good.

5.Trouble: Now we're into the songs that you can tell are original, one of the best songs on the album.

6.Rock With U: A 2 minute intro but it's a good beat.

7.A Woman's Worth: The new single, awesome vocals, music and lyrics.

8.Jane Doe: Great song, good beat

9.Goodbye: One of my favorite song's, very emotional

10.The Life: This has a kinda shaft vibe..it's unique

11.Mr Man: Cool song it has latin vibe to it.

12.Never Felt This Way: even though it's an interlude it's great

13.Butterflyz: Kinda fits in with the interlude, her voice is awesome.

14.Why Do I Feel So Bad?: I dunno, you shouldn't- most albums <...> by the last songs. This is just as good as fallin.

15.Caged Bird: Almost depressing it's so flowing

16.Lovin U: This makes me feel like i'm listening to gospel-not bad though.

Overall: I would give it 10 stars but Amazon doesn't allow it. Hopefully she doesnt get taken over by producers and her voice stays the same- perfect in every way. Plus she's <...> good looking.

Free Music Review: Quit with the India.Arie comparisons!
Hit: 5 Stars

I'm not going to give this album a low rating simply because she won 5 Grammys and India.Arie won none. India is boring to me, and to everyone on here who are carrying on and on (and on...) about how India got robbed and is infinitly more talented. All I have to to say is at this years Grammy's Mystic was the female that was truly robbed, 1 nomination for possibly the best album of the past 4 years? Any ways, I like Alicia, a lot. To say she doesn't make soul music is absurd. This album is full of very beautiful melodies. Sure the lyrics aren't always deep and thought provoking. But neither is hearing Jill Scott sing about cooking eggs and toast, and how much her orange juice cost at the store. Alicia is an extermely talented 20 year old. She is a good piano player, who can compose a melodly that will stick in your head. That is what a song is supposed to do, stay with you for hours until the next time you hear it. I for one am happy she won 5 Grammy's. It shows being a Musician is important, and should always come first. Her remake of "Why Don't You Call Me" is fabulous. How many people can say they re-made a Stephanie Mills song and did it justic? And remember, this is her first album, and she is only 20 years old. She can only get better from here, I look forward to hearing her 10th album, looking back on today and seeing how far she's came.
I'm sure if Alicia had dreads and wore a head wrap and dressed in robes she would be popular with all the neo soul fans. Remember it's not how you look but how you sound.

Free Music Review: An album that I believe will stand the test of time
Hit: 5 Stars

Alicia Key's J Records debut I think will prove to be an important standard setting album for the R&B and music world in general. With SONGS IN A MINOR, Alicia Keys propelled the mix between neo-soul, contemporary R&B, hip-hop, and soul into her own signature style. "Fallin'" turned into an instant hit and it was ubiquitous on radio upon its bowing coveting #1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

With this debut, Alicia Keys established herself as the complete package being able to write/arrange/produce and sing her own songs. Being a musician myself, I truly admire someone who does more than just sing without having some knowledge of how music works and operates. It is no wonder why SONGS IN A MINOR garnered Keys 5 Grammys for her very first album. It is well deserving of such accolades. I hate to hear people saying that it was overhyped because it isn't; there have been few female R&B artists who play piano as a main feature along with singing to. Only such artists in an elite such as Aretha Franklin (who played piano and composed some of her own material) did this. Furthermore, it is fresh as well as being soulful, something that many R&B artists fail to do with their albums.

My favorite songs are "Girlfriend", "How Come U Don't Call Me", "Fallin'", "Rock Wit U", "A Woman's Worth" and "Jane Doe". Also, the opening interlude/introduction is certainly unique as well. THE DIARY OF ALICIA KEYS also follows the similar format of an opening interlude. The perfect debut. 5 stars.

Free Music Review: Just admit that it's a great cd and quit hatin'!
Hit: 5 Stars

Alicia Keyes has unjustly caught a lot of flack regarding her debut cd, the professionalism of her promoters, and the # of awards she won vs how many certain other artists did NOT win. Some people have done everything that they could to detract from her success and to downplay her talents. But the truth of the matter is:

Songs in A Minor is a great cd. It caught a lot of attention upon release because Alicia is indeed more than a pretty face with a lot of high profile producers listed in the credits. She is truly talented, and her music is a breath of fresh air.

The cd touches on various genres, so that there is at least a little bit for many people. Note - I didn't say ALL people, because there's no way everyone will all like the same cd.

I still enjoy listening to it, and I've owned it for a while. Honestly, I usually bypass "Fallin'", but hey, who doesn't have at least ONE dysfunctional relationship under his/her belt? My favorites are: "How Come You Don't Call Me" - this song was downright therapeutic for me! "Mr. Man" - I love the way the music and lyrics flow on this duet. "Never Felt This Way" -sung so sweetly and with such feeling, "Rock Wit U" - this is funky.

Granted Alicia does have room to grow, as we all do, but she is a multidimensional artist. I look forward to future releases from her and watching her win many more well-deserved awards.
