Free Music Notes for The Diary of Alicia KeysFree Music Review: The Diary of Alicia Keys Hit: 5 Stars
I got this album the day it was released and wondered like a lot of her fans, if Alicia could top SIAM and go diamond but distance and perspective have made me realize that diamond status of an album does not mean good music was produced because as we all know, plenty of mediocre and less than mediocre "singers"/entertainers or whatever they call themselves are selling enough albums to go platinum.
A year later, the only songs that I still really don't like are Wake Up & Samsonite Man. Wake Up has a nice beat/production and message but...not one of my favs.
Otherwise the album is a solid hit - the standouts are the trifeckta: You Don't Know My Name, If I Ain't Got You & Diary. The placement of these three songs back to back to back is incredible - all three are love songs that touched my heart and I never tire of listening to them. I heard a lot of people complain that her speaking interlude in YDKMN was corny but it was a sweet throwback to the days when a breakdown was required in any love song.
The other standouts to me are: Karma, Harlem's Noc, So Simple, Heartburn and Nobody Not Really. Karma & Heartburn certainly surprised me with the funk factor - both are extremely catchy, fun songs that I love to hear and see her perform because I think they allow her to step out from behind the piano.
Rounding out my faves are: Dragon Days, Feelin U Feelin Me - interesting interlude, wished it could've gone on longer & her remake of If I Was Your Woman/Walk on By.
Overall I give this an A+ as a step up from SIAM - an excellent sophomore set from an artist who I expect to write/produce a album as important in the musical world as Stevie Wonder's Songs In The Key of Life one day.
Free Music Review: A master piece Hit: 5 Stars
I gotta say I am disappointed in some of these reviews attacking Alicia's "attitude" and lack of talent. Its kinda ridiculous, especially if you really listened to this album. This Cd is soooo good. Its great actually. This album is soulful, sexy, intense, real, unique... Need I say more? The lyrics are so emotional and deep. I love how she takes you through a journey from the 1960s to now with out skipping a beat. She is definitely a talented young lady. She bridges the gap between old soul and new soul allowing our generation to really appreciate older music from that era. My favorite tracks are Karma, Heartburn- So funky and different, please keep a open mind with this song, you will love it. Ofcourse You dont know my name, If I aint got you- I love this song so much, its a beautiful ballad, the emotion of her voice is intoxicating. Diary is really nice laid back song feat Tony Toni Tone, Dragon Days is a sexy sensual song about missing someone, one of my favorites. Wake up is a song that sounds like a straight thowback song of the sixties- very soulful. When you really love someone is like A Womans Worth part 2, yet fresh and nice- I love it. I even love the interlude- Feeling me feeling you- reaaly nice. Slow down sounds more of a radio r&B song but has a great message and still is a great song. This is a Cd that you sit in the tub with some scented candles and just groove to or listen to while you driving- either way, Its a really good CD. I definitely recommend this to anyone!!!1 For those who dont like the album, please listen to it a few times more... dont give up on this album. I guarentee you will fall in love with it too, if not then its obvious you dont know music and definitely lacking soul in your life!!!
Free Music Review: I am very pleasantly surprised Hit: 5 Stars
Ok, let me start off by saying that I am not at all an Alicia Keys fan. In fact, I thought that she was highly overrated when she first came out. Perhaps it was because she was being marketed as this really deep person, like a Lauryn Hill or something. I have also never been too impressed by her vocal skills at all. Let's just say that they are kinda average to me, and I'll just leave it at that. Anyway, when I heard "You don't know my name" I suddenly became hyped about the new project. I thought I would just buy it and if I didn't like it, oh well- I got it on sale. However, when I put it in, I found an album of infectious beats that are hard for me to get out of my head. I think that Alicia definitely embodies the spirit of the musical era she is going for. I have a great admiration and respect for her instrumental skills. I also think that her voice, though not phenominal, really fits the type of music that she is marketing. Since she doesn't have a pop voice or pop music, it's fine that she's not the best singer in the world. I have not stopped listening to this album since I got it. My favorites are Heartburn (come on-that beat is just really tight! you just feel it in your gut), Diary (Absolutely beautiful, to say the least), When you really love someone (It just sounds like a really old school cut), You don't know my name (old school-ish classic), and If I ain't got you (very soulful). I think that whether you are an Alicia fan or not, you deserve to have this in your collecion. If you don't like her voice, I guarantee you will absolutely fall in love with the musical arrangements. I think I'll actually give the first album a chance now that I have heard what she really has to offer.
Free Music Review: Miss Keys Does It Again... Hit: 5 Stars
I bought it last Wednesday (with part of my first paycheck from the new gig! *w00t*). This CD tops her first one. She's one of few performers who can wear the title of artist and wear it well -- she's always honing her craft, and produces marvelous results!! This album is proof that Alicia means biz-nessss when it comes to producing quality music. I have one pet peeve about it, though -- my two most absolute favorite tracks on the CD are the two shortest ones!! The last track, "Nobody Not Really" is a beautiful song, but it's under three minutes long; the other one that's tops with me is "Feelin' U, Feelin' Me." It's an interlude, but it's so smooth, it should have been a song in itself. It has a definite "get busy" kind o' vibe. She plays the Rhodes piano and synthesizers on "Feelin'..." so well that Stevie Wonder, the perfector of the Arp and Moog synthesizers, would be proud! Of course, "You Don't Know My Name," is the gem of the CD, and "Heartburn," which is produced by one of the hottest producers (pardon the redundancy) in the biz, Timberland (move over, P-"Dippy"), pays homage to the foremothers and forefathers of funk -- if you wanna "get jiggy," then this is the song to listen to. The slower songs, "If I Ain't Got You," and "When You Really Love Someone" (which sounds like a combination of "Fallin'" and "A Woman's Worth" from her debut album -- which is good thing) also score big with me. In short, the CD is hot...No, no, it's, scorchin'!!
