Free Music Review: Fantastic Sophomore outing! Hit: 5 Stars
A masterpiece, superior to its predecessor which, don't get me wrong was very good.
There is a relaxed, breezy feel to the whole cd, and the songs catch you instantly. The lead off single 'You don't know my name' is a brilliant song (co penned with Kanye West), reminiscent of classic 70s soul, complete with a spoken word section. In fact, the whole cd sounds like classics from the 70s, amazing to find that all but one of the songs are penned or co penned by Keys.
On 'If I aint got you', 'If I was your woman' (an excellent remake by the way) and 'When you really love someone', she sings with a raspy growl seeping with passion, akin to Mary J bilge.
Shock horror on seeing her work with Timbaaland (don't get me wrong, I love Timbaaland, but didn't think his futuristic funk would fit Alicia's smooth retro soul), but the result is the lovely retro funk of 'Heartburn'. All she needs now is an afro.
'So simple' is simply fab and is my favourite, with delicate piano tinklings sprinkled throughout. 'Dragon days' is a corker, 'Diary', 'Samsonite man', the lovely interlude 'Feeling U, feeling me', and the jazzy 'Nobody, not really' are superb.
Another good point, averaging 4 minutes, no song overstays its welcome (exception, 'You don't know my name' which needs all of its 6 minutes 6 seconds to weave its magic).
There were few soul cds released in 2003 which can dream of coming close to this soon-to-be-classic. Awesome!!!
Free Music Review: Her Diary = A Fine Chameleon. Hit: 5 Stars
"The Diary Of Alicia Keys'" puts Beyonce, Shakira, Underwood, & all of todays female artists from every genre of music in the bargain bin. The album starts with the classical song "Harlem's Nocturne." Her Piano playing is superb, then a choir joins in aided by a fine beat. "Karma," is adriven song that uses Alicia's vocals at their best. "Heartburn," has a good drum beat as her raw vocals compare her lust for a man with the title. "If I Was your Woman/Walk On," is a jazzy version of Isaac Hayes-"Walk On by."
"You Don't Know My Name," is a 1970's finesse ballad. It is a refreshing female version of male angst, the spoken interlude in the middle fits perfectly. "If I Ain't Got You," sounds like a mix of gospel & Aretha Franklin. This may have Alicia's best vocals on this album? The brass behind Alicia's Piano added elegance. "Diary," is a fine gentle song. It sounds like it came off of her debut album. This one was my favorite of her Sophmore album.
"When You Really Love Someone," seems like a cross between "A Woman's Worth & Fallin?" I would call it the former part two. "Wake Up & So Simple" are too familiar & the latter has some annoying sounds. "Slow Down," is reminiscent of Janet Jackson's "Lets Wait Awhile." "Nobody Not Really," is lighter & has a less cloudy or dark feel as if the day was just starting. She wonders who will be interested in this her diary? Obviously, several million to date & with good reason. This is a fine album.

Free Music Review: WOW! what more can i say? Hit: 5 Stars
WOW. I went out and brought this c.d. today and I can say that I DEFINATLEY DO NOT REGRET spending 20-some dollars on it. I got it on the strength of two singles: If I Ain't Got You and Diary. The first made me sit up and thank god that rnb is back. This song is amazing. I like the way her voice almost breaks in the chorus thru the anguish she endures "Some people want it all/But i dont want nothing at all/If I ain't got you". The second song, Diary, just blew me away when i first heard it. Its one of those songs that give u goosebumps when you first hear it, like "U Make Me Wanna" by Usher or "Never Let me Down" form Kanye West. The Song is PHENOMINAL! I hope it gets all the success it deserves. And with Tony!Toni!Tone! guesting on it, it makes the second half of the song even better. The real major difference from Songs In A Minor is that it sounds more fluid. There is far less stop/start piano work than in songs like "Fallin'", and heavy 'duhhhhhh da da duhhh' like in "A Woman's Worth". It has way greater production and her voice, oh, itz unbeliveable. Way richer, way more emotive, it sounds like shes expressing the words rather than jus saying them. Unlike other rnb c.d.'s that have come out of late, (Beyonce, Ashanti, and whatnot) this is one of those c.d.'s that u have to LISTEN to, not jus HEAR. Go out and buy it, money unregretably spent.
