Free Music Notes for Alison Krauss & Union Station - LiveFree Music Review: Do you have two ears? Hit: 5 Stars
If so, this is your lucky day. Check them one more time in case of an accidental miscount, but once you're quite sure you have a weird-looking flap on either side of your head, go and buy this glorious piece of beauty, because no other qualification is necessary.I'm not a music buff, but I'd like to say thank-you to all the knowledgeable amazon listeners on this page for writing so compellingly and well about this wonderful discovery I've made - I had never heard a note of Alison Krauss and her band of magicians, and bought it purely on the strength of what I read here. Some such clutches in the dark have been disastrous, but not this time... Seldom in my life have I come across such a thrilling display of people doing something well, and of other people enjoying being near them while it happens. Dismiss as absurd the contrary voices who complain about the crowd noise, because it does nothing but add to the sense of high occasion. When you buy a live recording, you're going to hear people clap. It's not rocket science, so get used to it. Instead of fussing about the occasional hoot, feast yourself on the music, with all its variety and energy and sheer heart-stopping delight. Either that, or save your money up and buy yourself some ears.
Free Music Review: One Hella Good LIVE Album Hit: 5 Stars
I had the chance to see Alison Krauss and Union Station in concert December 5 of 2003, and I was just amazed by them. Union Station played exceptionally and Alison Krauss's vocals were flawless. She sounds better live than in the studio, I think. This live album is amazing. It's one CD case with two CD's in it, the first featuring 13 songs, the second featuring 12. I recently wrote a review for the DVD of the concert of this LIVE CD awhile ago and after seeing Alison Krauss perform on the Oscars last night, I figured I'd give this LIVE CD a little review. Wasn't she something folks? She did great on the two Cold Mountain songs "You Will Be My Ain True Love" and "Scarlet Tide", and I notice, the Cold Mountain soundtrack is doing nicely in sales after the Oscars. Alison Krauss has the voice of an angel and it really amazes me how well she performs live. She doesn't need to lip-synch like many of today's artists, and she sounds a lot better live other than just being in the studio. This LIVE CD featured some of their most popular hits and some not so popular, but still adored by the many fans who have followed her and Union Station for years. If you want beautiful Bluegrass music, this CD is the one for you.
Free Music Review: A wonderful live compilaton Hit: 5 Stars
O.K., I'm a big fan and I was expecting this two c/d set to be very good, but this exceeds my expectations in several ways. Ist of all the sound quality is perfect - I mean flawless - 5 stars. The Song selection is also 5 stars both for quality and quantity, and with 25 songs on 2 c/d's this is a real deal. I also like the fact that there's not a lot of talk - this is 99.9% music without a lot of kidding around. I was glad to see the band cut up a little on the TV concert - that was fun, but this live set is music, music, music. The variety of songs is 5 stars also - plenty of pop for the folks who love ballads and plenty of bluegrass for the purists. "But You Know I Love You" the old kenny Rogers & 1st Edition song is wonderful and the closing song, Ron's "There is a Reason" is such a sweet song for these times. A great introduction for new fans and a real treasure for the old ones. I saw them on the New Favorite tour (Mobile) and they were great, but the Louisville shows must have been a peak performance for the band. I grew up in 1960's loving the Beatles, Beach Boys, Stones, Who, Rundgren, America etc. so I'm not really a bluegrass person, but I've got to say that this is about as good as music gets these days, folks.
Free Music Review: Wow! Hit: 5 Stars
I have heard Alison Krauss and Union Station piecemeal over a period of years on the weekly KUNM-FM radio program "Folk Routes," and jumped at the chance to pick up this live, 2-CD set. Live sets often are a gamble sound quality wise, but I was pleasantly surprised (estactic is the right word) with "Alison Krauss + Union Station Live." Alison shines on both vocals and fiddle, examples of the former on songs such as "Baby, Now That I've Found You," and the latter on the rolicking, crowd-pleasing instrumental "Cluck Old Hen." Jerry Douglas's dobro is a strongpoint of both the band and this performance. Dan Tyminski takes over lead vocals on another of many highlights of this set, "The Boy Who Wouldn't Hoe Corn," with a long dobro lead-in by Jerry. And, of course, the real crowd pleaser on this set is Tyminski (lead vocals), Jerry, Ron Block and Barry Bales reprising their work on the "Oh Brother, Where Art Thou" soundtrack foundation, "I am a Man of Constant Sorrow." For me, another gem on this set carried over from the "Oh Brother" soundtrack is Alison, Dan, Ron and Barry soaring rendition of "Down to the River to Pray." This incredible CD -- a great value -- continues to see heavy rotation in my CD players.
Free Music Review: I was there for the show, and this is almost as good! Hit: 5 Stars
First of all, if you ever have the chance to see these guys live, don't hesitate--it's worth every cent. They are witty, comfortable on stage, in tune with audiences, and INCREDIBLE musicians. I've seen them play in Virginia, New York City, and now here in Louisville. The Louisville show was even better than the others, and it's well captured here. Listening recaptures that night for me, and thrills to the bone. You'll get a good taste of how much fun the concert was at the end of "lucky one" and during "man of constant sorrow." To echo the other reviewers, I must say that Alison is a true pleasure to listen to. Likewise, the band is fantastic--crisp and ferocious, but also full of emotion and subtlety. Jerry Douglas's dobro is especially phenomenal throughout. I'll bet the DVD version of this is great (the theatre really is so beautiful, as was the stage set). If you like this, I highly recommend both AKUS's earlier cds (especially "now that I've found you," "new favorite," and "so long so wrong") as well as Jerry Douglas's "slide rule," and nickel creek's eponymous release. This is newgrass at its best--and you will be hooked!
