Free Music Notes for Alison Krauss & Union Station - LiveFree Music Review: A must have! Hit: 5 Stars
I first heard about AKUS about 4 years ago, when I watched their videos "new favorite" and "the lucky one" on CMT. Well, they intrigued me but I was not by any means a fan of blue grass. I'm just your average 22 year old, I like pop and R&B and such.
I picked up their live album at a Borders store. It took me a while to get used to this style of music, but, let me tell you, they have become my most favored country band and Alison Krauss my most favored country singer, EVER!
I had the pleasure of watching Alison Krauss and Union Station perform live just a few months ago when they came to New Mexico. Their live performance is amazing. Alison has true talent. She sounds just as great live as in the recording studio, heck, she may even sound better! How many artists today can claim that?
Alison Krauss has the most beautiful voice I think I have ever, EVER heard. Her fiddling skills are equally amazing. This live album blew me away! I've never heard ANY band that sounds so great live. This album is a nice compilation of their hit songs and if you are new to their music, its a good way to become familiar with the band. This album is simply a must have!
Free Music Review: I was at this show with my wife.... Hit: 5 Stars
I went to this show at the Louisville Palace Theatre at the end of April. We new that they were recording this show for both a CD and a DVD (due out in early 2003), and we were very excited about the prospect of a recording of a show that we went to. When we arrived at the theater, there was a large camera obstructing our view from about 30 rows back. Just when I was about to start cursing, the house manager introduced herself to us and moved us up to the front row, center in front of Alison. True story!!! Now, back to the show. From top to bottom, this show was incredible. From the lilting voice of Alison, to the rocking jams of Jerry Douglas and Dan Tyminski, every song had the entire audience rocking, tapping their feet, and wanting much more. The highlights of this CD to me are the foot-tapping jams of "Choctaw Hayride", the angelic voice of Alison on "Bay, Now That I've Found You" and "Maybe", and the Soggy Bottom Boys doing a home-state rendition of "I am a Man of Constant Sorrow." There is a not a weak link on this CD. The two nights in Lousiville in April 2002 were an incredible experience that you too can experience on this CD and soon on DVD.
Free Music Review: At Last! Bluegrass That Tastes Good Hit: 5 Stars
I've always been very discriminating in music. Few country artists could ever impress me, Marty Robbins, Jim Reeves, singers like that maybe. And bluegrass performers? Forget it! I grew up in Tennessee but I dug R&B, soul, blues, things like that in general. I still do. For a long time, it seemed all the country music people could do for bluegrass was to trot out Bill Monroe (who always seemed to a hundred years old). With apologies to Ricky Skaggs, was bluegrass gone? So what if it was? Then came Alison. Where had she been? How could she be so talented, so,uh, eclectic (ahem) with that resume of experience, so sexy? And where did she get that soulful, crystalline voice that conveys so much emotion that you cannot help but be touched? Never mind that she's dynamite with her fiddle too. I sit limp and listen to the music in this package, humbled by the sheer beauty and the broad range of emotions. Nothing else quite compares to the songs herein as a whole. I feel like a sinner brought home in shame to repent. My apologies to Bill Monroe, Ralph Stanley and the High Priestess of Bluegrass, Alison Krauss. And if you already LIKE bluegrass, this is your meat.
Free Music Review: What Did You Expect? Hit: 5 Stars
Many people, far more eloquent than myself have heaped well deserved praise on AKUS (Alison Krauss and Union Station) so I'll not even attempt to add any additional comment to their considerable and varied talents as individuals and as a group. I will try to explain their appeal for those who are new to this musical phenomena. I've always been an avid listener of music, particularly rock and roll. Other than Clint BLack and Willie Nelson, I've had no interest in Country or Bluegrass. But if you like and appreciate music, regardless of its genre, youll like, likely love AKUS. They are not Bluegrass and they are not Country. They are really impossible to categorize. They are wonderfully talented artists/musicians who collectively far exceed the sum of their individual abilities. This live CD I think captures their near incomprehensible musical and emotional reach. I waited for this cd to appear in stores as did many other fans. Its what youd expect from them. Its beautiful, brilliant, classy and very entertaining. Alison can sing and the guys can play. Buy it.
Free Music Review: Great Live Album with In-Studio Production Values Hit: 5 Stars
Alison Krauss & Union Station - Live is a marvelous live album with some of the production values I have ever heard. Each track has a terrific warmth and richness. The two-CD set combines the soft floating voice of Alison with the hard-driving bluegrass of a talented collection of musicians to provide a high level of entertainment, especially as morning or evening drive time listening in the car. Ms. Krauss' voice is used to wonderful advantage in such tracks as "Let Me Touch You for Awhile," "The Lucky One," "Forget About It," "There is a Reason," and many others. One of my favorites is the plaintive "Ghost in this House." By the same token, the bluegrass instrumentals such as "Choctaw Hayride" and "Cluck Old Hen" can best be described as quintessential country-car-chase tunes. For those who have never had the pleasure of listening either to Ms. Krauss or to bluegrass, this album is an excellent introduction to both and is an essential recording in every respect.
